The media and single motherhood

Today, I read an article that stated that one third of women in the United States are single mothers before the age of 30. The article was comparing the statistics of the 1960's in which 90% of single mothers were married to today where the married percentage of moms is considerably less.

There is no doubt that a child needs both a mother and a father. However, I remember my father hardly being around when I was growing up. My parents were married, but my father was often traveling for work and most of my childhood was spent with my grandmother and my mother. I recall that I did miss my father, but I loved being with my mom. I suppose the absence of fathers in children's lives does contribute to psychological hardships in children, and it does contribute to the breakdown of society.

I was just thinking "when did it become alright for a girl to have a child out of wedlock?". I mean, the show "16 and Pregnant" on MTV glorifies teenage motherhood. Yes, it does show the hardships of being a teen mom, but it also makes it "OK". The more disturbing statistic that was also mentioned in the article was that 60% of teen girls today WANT to be teen moms. That was a startling piece of information to me. Is society glamorizing single motherhood through shows like "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" in which Kourtney Kardashian is pregnant with her second child out of wedlock? Are women and girls being fooled by the media and celebrities who have children out of wedlock and thinking that being a single mother is hip and modern?

These celebrities have money to pay for nannies, and au pairs that the normal single mother cannot possibly afford. The Kardashians, to me, are nothing more than "famous for being famous" psuedo celebrities that are just shallow and empty, I wouldn't use them as the picture of great motherhood examples. Yet, many women and girls do idolize these people and end up thinking that they too can have a baby alone and it will be OK. Most single moms are borderline poor or live in complete poverty. Their lives are not glamorous in the least and they lead difficult existences.

Please do not think that I'm just disapproving of single motherhood and that is all. What I'm disapproving of is the "glamorization" of single motherhood by the media and celebrities. Please let me know what you think of this. Thank you and God bless you all!
