“The Lord is my portion;
I have promised to keep Your words.
I sought Your favor with all my heart;
Be gracious to me according to Your word.
I considered my ways
And turned my feet to Your testimonies.
I hastened and did not delay
To keep Your commandments.
The cords of the wicked have encircled me,
But I have not forgotten Your law.
At midnight I shall rise to give thanks to You
Because of Your righteous ordinances.
I am a companion of all those who fear You,
And of those who keep Your precepts.
The earth is full of Your lovingkindness, O Lord;
Teach me Your statutes.” (Psalm 119:57-64 NASB1995)
If the Lord is my portion, what does that mean? He is my inheritance, my reward, my security, and the one in whom I place my trust and to whom I give control of my life, my heart, my service, and my obedience. He is the one I live for, to serve him with my life. He is King, and he is Lord, and there is no other who surpasses him. I am not looking to any other to fulfill me and to give me purpose and direction, for he is my life and my purpose.
And since he is my portion, my heart’s desire is that I might live to please him in all that I am and do and say. But I am still clay in the hands of the Potter, in the process of being molded into the likeness of character of Christ Jesus my Lord, being made holy by my Master, whom I serve with my life. I am a disciple (follower) of Jesus Christ (of God, the Son), and so I am daily yielded to his will and purpose for my life, in obeying his call upon my life.
I do consider my ways, not that my ways are always perfect in every respect. But I have turned away from sin and, by the grace of God, and in the power of God, I am now able to walk in holiness and in righteousness, in obedience to my Lord and to his commands, and to his will and purpose for my life, which he had planned for me even before he created me in the womb of my mother. All the days ordained for me were written in his book.
But this isn’t just about me. I was just identifying with the Psalmist. This should be representative of everyone who is a true disciple of Jesus Christ, who has died with Christ to sin, and has been raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin, but now as slaves to God and to his righteousness, in holy living. The Lord should be for all of us our portion, and our commitment should be to fully obey his commands.
And, if this is true about us, the cords of the wicked will indeed encircle us to attempt to conquer us and to bring us under their control and not under Holy Spirit control. For Satan will “pull out all the stops” to attempt to get us to fail and to turn away from the Lord and from his will and purpose for our lives. So he will bring people against us to accuse us falsely of what we did not do in hopes to make us afraid so that we will give up and run away.
Knowing that this is what is taking place, it should only strengthen us all the more to keep fighting the good fight of faith, and to keep persevering in the call of God to be his witnesses, and to take the true gospel message to the people of the world, and to refute the lies of Satan, and to proclaim the truth of God’s Word. For so many people are believing and following after lies and not after the truth of God’s word, while believing they are heaven bound.
And we should pray that the Lord will bring other Christians into our lives who are following the Lord, in truth, who are those who walk in the fear of the Lord, in obedience to his commands, and whose lives are committed to the Lord and to his service. We can be an encouragement to one another, to help one another to keep walking the walk of faith and to not give up when we are opposed by Satan because of our walks of obedience to the Lord.

With my whole heart, Lord, I pray
To be Yours, and Yours always.
Lead me in Your truth today.
May I love You, and obey.
Lead me in Your righteousness.
When I sin, may I confess;
Bow before You when I pray;
Live for You and You always.
Love You, Jesus, You’re my friend.
Life with You will never end.
You are with me through each day,
Giving love and peace always.
You will ne’er abandon me.
From my sin You set me free.
You died on that cruel tree,
So I’d live eternally.
Soon You’re coming back for me;
From this world to set me free;
Live with You eternally.
Oh, what joy that brings to me.
I will walk with You in white;
A pure bride, I’ve been made right
By the blood of Jesus Christ;
Pardoned by His sacrifice.
