The enormity of sin

Do we really know how enormous sin is? It is enormous because it encompasses such a wide range of actions. Since I was born again, so many things have become sin to me. Not necessarily because the bible illustrates them, but because the Holy Spirit convicts me of them. We know the ten commandments and how important they are to understanding sin. After all, they are the Father’s instructions on how to increase in holiness. The ten commandments are the basic outline for what constitutes sin. Before I go any farther with these thoughts I need to state the fact that I struggle just like anyone else. I am a disgusting sinner but I no longer live in sin. There is a huge difference between being repentant and being someone who doesn’t mind the sin. If we could be perfectly holy and never sin then we would have had no use for the sacrifice of Jesus. But it was His sacrifice that made it possible for us to increase even an inch in holiness. Because of what He did, it is possible for us to resist sin.

The Spirit is convicting me on so many things that I once took for granted. It started with the obvious sins of course. We all have knowledge of those from whomever the person or people are who helped bring us to the saving knowledge of God’s grace. Recently, the most frivolous of actions have become serious sins. Some examples of things I’ve been convicted of lately include, not driving the speed limit, littering, cussing, drinking alcohol, or wearing jewelry. The spirit has convicted me so that these things are more categories of sin. A lot of these things are not mentioned in the bible specifically as sin. There are plenty of people nowadays who are so called “christians”, who take an action that is questionable as sin and try to justify it using God’s holy word. A great example of this is marijuana usage. A biblical Christian knowing the entirety of the bible and the values instilled by it would know that marijuana usage is sin. Lately I have heard the argument that since marijuana comes from the earth and that everything God created is good so that must mean marijuana usage is ok. Before I was born again I might have given some credibility to this argument even though I always strongly disagreed with drug usage of any kind. I believe whole heartedly that the Lord intends for us to remain sober at all times. 1st Peter 5:8 says be sober, be vigilant because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.

I would be interested in hearing what other people thought about the enormity of sin. Are there things that aren’t addressed in the bible that you consider sin? Are there things that you once considered ok, but are not convicted of since being born again? I realize that some individuals reading this may be new Christians or perhaps not born again. I have been a confessing Christian since I was told the gospel as a child but fell into sin for a long season. I was finally born again in April 2010. However strong your walk is with the Lord I would still be interested in reading your thoughts on the enormity of sin.
