The church of Christ is often small
No roof to call her own
But there her Shepherd’s heard the call
And lives to Christ alone
No unsaved elders tie them down
The Spirit leads the way
So all God’s sheep receive a crown
From whom they’ll never stray
An unwatched fields succumbs to weed
Submits to pest and blight
God’s pasture bears His Holy Seed
That grows toward the light
Many have served of great repute
With talents grand and fair
Yet works of man are but the fruit
God gives for all to share
Man cannot save from wrath or flame
We cannot buy God’s love
We cannot take away the shame
Or purchase life above
Yet works can guide a child that’s lost
May help a weary soul
Can shelter whom life’s storms have tossed
And steer toward the goal
If man could see Salvation’s plan
God’s will; would soon be done
For man would leave, the church of man
And serve God’s risen Son
For this! God’s church must stand erect
Must serve the Lord alone
Till all her children, God’s elect
