The Abiding

John 15: 1-10

Who can abide but those who contain the Holy Spirit – for this is the ‘life’s blood’ that runs through the spiritual veins of a soul who is in the body of Christ.

If you do not have the Holy Spirit to flow in and through you, you are dead and cannot abide.

The tree of the Lord is one where His branches are in communion with Him – always. There is no respite and it is where there is a continual motivation to strive on that narrow way; Matt 7:13-14. ‘Oh but this is works and you cannot achieve salvation through works’ many will say. True, Salvation was a work that no human or angelic being could ever have achieved and was accomplished through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Him is found new life, where one becomes born again as they receive the product of His work and believe in Him; John 3:3-8. This is our gift, it cost us nothing – it cost Christ everything; John 3:16.

There is a work though, in taking up His gift to us – to lay hold of it! For does not a treasure such as this deserve our utmost care and diligence in honoring it? We are His temple; 1 Cor 6:19-20, to further understand the holiness and respect this deserves and the high standards of God see Exodus 25-30.

Believing is not just by saying the words: ‘I believe in Jesus.’ For even demons believe; James 2:19.

Believing means to live according to what/who you believe – to do otherwise you are not believing; James 2:14-26.

The gift of Salvation should not be taken and used as some sort of free pass, for this is not found in scripture. There is a work that is required by those who would lay hold of Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior for the Salvation He provides. It is called obedience to His word, His teaching. In obedience, through the grace of the Holy Spirit in giving us all power to overcome and live holy lives we may abide.

Salvation is yet still to come but we have been sealed by the Holy Spirit for this promise. 1 Cor 1:21-22 Eph 1:13 and in this time, we can grieve His Spirit Eph 4:29-31 consider the consequence that Is 63:10 reveals: ‘But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; So He turned Himself against them as an enemy, And He fought against them.’

Heb 6:4-6 reveals further: ‘For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.’

Let us consider daily, our life in the abiding of Christ Jesus our Lord that it be a continual living interaction with His spirit and our accommodating Him in all that He reveals to us through His word. For this is the joy we have been granted as we live here on earth! Amen!
