There is a lot of talk of religious persecution these days, including of Christians. It seems to me the faith itself is not being persecuted because of it's association with Jesus, but merely because it is not the same as someone else's beliefs. More a matter of human political strife if you like.
In other words, people are being persecuted, not because of their Christian faith's contents but simply because it is not the prescribed faith or belief of the persecutor. No different than when Rome persecuted other faiths because they simply were different and did not adhere to localized majority rule; or when the Jews persecuted the Way because they didn't remain in the fold.
All persecutors are more defensively focused on themselves in mini delusions of grandeur than on why others practice different faiths. The same is obvious throughout the various denominations within Christianity. It always boils down to self, the original sin.
