Brandon Heath has a song, called give me your eyes. It talks about taking a look through Gods eyes, and seeing all of the trouble and problems that other people have. I take this seriously because you never know what people are going through. I make it a point to smile at strangers say hi to people working if I’m shopping. Just because you never know the impact you have on people. A story that describes this well goes like this. Their once was a woman whose fiancé went off to war, they wrote each other the whole time he was gone. One day the letters stopped coming, until the letter from a friend of her fiancé it read I’m sorry to inform you that your fiancé was killed in action, he was a great man and he saved my life numerous times. We all miss him greatly and our sympathy goes out to you for your loss. The woman fell into a violent depression she quit her job, stopped talking to friends and family. Eventually she just locked herself in her house. Many years passed and a man wondered up to her door, rang the bell and waited patiently, a few moments passed with no reply. He rang the doorbell again and looked into the window he saw the woman watching tv and not paying attention to the doorbell. Eventually the man got tired of ringing the doorbell so he thought “Perhaps if I sit here on the stoop she will eventually look at the door. He laid his pack down and leaned against it, a few moments passed and he pulled out an instrument and began to play a mysterious song. Immediately the woman recognized the music and ran to the door. She threw it open her smile brighter then the sun, but when she looked down it became a frown because this man was not her fiancé. The man kept playing a small smirk on his face and the woman waited in the doorway space. The man finished and began to stand, the woman stepped back and withdrew her hand. He smiled and said Ma’am I was the man who wrote the letter, your fiancé was my best friend and he taught me this song and when he laid in battle dying he handed me his instrument. I came all of this way because I promised your fiancé I would make sure you were doing alright. The woman began to cry and sob in front of the man he stepped up and gave her a hug and the woman invited him in. The first time in years that she communicated with anyone, the man sat down and as he looked upon this woman he felt overwhelmed for he knew she was not well. “What can I say to fix the damage that has been done” He thought. Then he got an Idea, he pulled out the instrument and began to play and the woman’s smile went from night to day. No words were said, no movement was given, only the sound of the music filled they’re heads. The song was finished and he looked towards the woman she finally spoke. “I have not smiled in so many years, waiting for death all I knew were tears.” The man replied “I’m sorry for the loss and I must be on my way, but I promise to return and play for you everyday”. Many years passed and every day the man would come over to play music for the widow. Then one day while he was about to leave she stopped and said please follow me. They walked into the living room where she originally sat, and they’re in the chair was a letter. She picked it up and handed it to the man. As he read it his soul began to melt, his smile faded. For it was a suicide letter. “The day you rang my doorbell I had taken oh so many pills and I waited in anticipation for my death to be fulfilled. When I heard you play I thought I was dead, but it was life you gave me instead” the man got down and pulled out a ring, and proposed to the woman, she smiled so sweetly and said yes. They lived happily ever after.
The reason for this story is simple, you never know how hard other people may have it, if the man would have just walked away that day and said forget it the woman would have died. That’s how it is all around us, why be rude to a waiter or stranger? Your words could be the breaking point for someone. So my words to you are rethink your life, look at your flaws whether its pride or you’re a mean person. Just make it a habbit of being encouraging to other people. I spent 10minutes talking to my cashier at walmart today because the person in front of me was very rude to her. The bonus encounters in a persons day give them strength to keep moving forward.
