Solomon
As Solomon slowly wakes up, stretching and gazing off in thought, stage left lights fade slowly to black
Narrator
When Solomon woke up he realized that God had spoken to him in the dream. Solomon went back to Jerusalem and stood in front of the sacred chest, the Ark of the Lord's covenant, where the Spirit of God lived, and he offered sacrifices to please the Lord and sacrifices to ask his blessing. Then Solomon gave a feast for his officials
When narrator begins " Then Solomon gave…" Begin to fade stage right to bright and stage left to black. The two woman, the baby and the guards get into place stage left
Rachel
"Well, I think that’s kind of lame! I mean, yeah, he ended up getting stuff after he asked for wisdom, but he didn’t know 'that' was going to happen, I mean, whats he sposed to do with wisdom anyways. I would have asked for something real, like a bike..."
Kim
"Yeah, (she interrupts Rachel when Rachel says like a bike...)I don't really get it either. I mean, I know wisdom is about you getting smart or something, but how is that going to help you 'get' something
Mom
"Well, getting wisdom is a whole lot more than just 'getting smart'. Wisdom is about understanding Gods ways and seeing through the problems to the solutions instead of worrying about them. And getting a gift like wisdom can bring huge blessings, not just to yourself, but to others as well. Lets go back to the story and see what this wisdom does for Solomon. I think we left off in verse 16
Stage right fades to black, as narrator talks, slowly fade stage left to bright, Solomons on his throne, two woman are there along with a gaurd, the is armed with a sword. The 2 woman are kneeling before Solomon, facing each other looking up to Solomon, a baby between them. As the narrator says "when a problem..." turn up baby sounds and then fade them to a light background sound
Narrator
Some time later two woman came to the king in his palace as was the custom when a problem was too big to solve alone
Woman 1
“Please, my lord, this woman and I live in the same house. Not long ago my baby was born at home, and three days later her baby was born. Nobody else was there with us. One night while we were all asleep, she rolled over on her baby, and he died. Then while I was still asleep, she got up and took my son out of my bed. She put him in her bed, then she put her dead baby next to me. In the morning when I got up to feed my son, I saw that he was dead. But when I looked at him in the light, I knew he wasn't my son
Woman 2
“It certainly was your son! And the living child is mine!” (She interrupts when woman 1 says, "my son…" and vehemently 'spits' the words out. She faces Solomon in defiance when she says 'And the living child is mine, stomping her foot for emphasis'
Woman 1
“The living child is mine, and the dead one is yours.” (She replies with vehemance facing woman 2)They continue to argue, with woman 2being the aggressor and woman 1 fighting and being despondant. They are both standing now and facing each other, argueing back and forth before the King until he yells 'enough!' When they both freeze and drop to the floor. As they argue slowly turn up baby crying audio, blast it loudly when Solomon says 'enough'
Solomon
"Enough!(The baby starts to cry and woman 1 reaches over to soothe him, baby crying sounds fade but still lightly in the background)
"Let’s get the facts straight. Both of you claim the living child is yours, and each says that the dead one belongs to the other. All right, bring me a sword.”
The Guard brings Solomon a sword, the Guard stands ready with the sword in hand
Solomon
"Cut the baby in half! That way each of you can have part of him"
As the guard raises the sword and moves toward the baby, the baby starts to cry louder, Woman 1 throws over the baby, protecting him & still next to woman 2. As the dialogue goes on between the two woman it is almost as if woman 2 cant even hear woman 1 as she talks in, through and around woman 1
Woman 1
Please don't kill my son," (the baby's mother screams)
Woman 2
"Go ahead! Cut him in half. (She says, almost egging him on, interrupting when Woman 1 says 'please dont kill him'
Woman 1
"Your Majesty, I love him very much, but, please don't kill him. (She sobs, imploring the King)
Woman 2
"Then neither of us will have the baby." (She replies smugly, folding her arms, victoriously, visciously as the guard stands ready to strike
Woman 1
She pauses, stands up, looks down at the baby and says hoarsely "Let her have him". (She says resignedly, sadly, as Woman 2 says 'Then neither of us will have the baby"She turns her head away and sobs) "Just, please don’t kill him
Solomon
“Hold!! (He says emperiously) Do not kill the child, but give him to the woman who wants him to live, for she is his mother!”
Woman 2 stomps off and woman 1 bends down, coddling her baby crying tears of joy
Narrator
"Everyone in Israel was amazed when they heard how Solomon had made his decision. They realized that God had given him wisdom to judge fairly. Lets see what the girls think of this story"
As woman 1 coddles baby, turn off crying baby and cue up happy, gurgly, baby sounds turned low, but disernable in the background of the next scene. When the narrator says, 'Lets see what…' slowly fade stage left lights and bring up stage right lights
Rachel
"Mom? Do you think Solomon would have really cut the baby in two like it says in the story?"
(She uses a kind of hushed, fearfull, haltingly deliberate tone to her voice as she tries to sort it all out in her mind
Mom
"One thing you have to remember honey, when you read the bible you are reading actual history and not just a story. This was a real situation in these womans lives. I think he knew the real mom would NEVER allow her son to be harmed and he counted on her to do the right thing, save her son."
Kim
"Mom? Will you please give Rachel the doll? I don’t want it to be cut up, it would be better to just let her play with it". (She says with all seriousness
Rachel
"Mom, I was the one who broke my doll, I was sad and mad that I didn’t have one any more so I took Kims. Im sorry Kim! Please take it back." (She hands Kim the doll
Mom
"I am so proud of the both of you! Here, give me a hug. Why don’t you guys just play with it together."
Lights slowly fade to black as Mom goes out the door. The door slowly closes with a distinct click of finality
Kim and Rachel
"Wait a minute! Wait a minute! Bring the lights back on! (They yell out as the lights continue to fade to black) Mom! I thought you said we could have some ice cream? Can we have some mom? Please…" ( They continue to ask her as the lights fade to black and the door shuts, then they look at each other and say) We didnt get any! (In sad unison)
