The first area I'd like to tell you about are negative symptoms, mainly associated with schizophrenia, but can also surface with people that have depression.
Briefly explained, negative symptoms are behavoirs that are normally present, but in a person with a mental illness are drastically diminished. For example, motivation can be drastically reduced, the person with schizophrenia wants to go out and get a job, however his reduction of motivation makes it impossible for him to be able to get out and look. Lack of emotional affect, the person is unable to have normal responses to situations, eg expresses no emotion in a really sad or happy situation.
This can make it difficult for family members who think that their loved one just needs to get of their backside, and get out and do things. They dont understand how much of an impact that negative symptoms can have on a persons life. Its not simply a case of building a bridge and getting over it
