1 Corinthians 11:5
But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved.
This is a pretty hot topic. Often in America we see Muslim women with head coverings and ask don’t they feel oppressed? But if we really look at things maybe a head covering is the right thing to do.
Nuns cover their heads. The Virgin Mary covers her head. Christian, Jewish, and Muslim women all over the world cover their heads. When women go to visit the Pope they must cover their heads. Often Latin Catholics cover their heads at Mass.
I am still very unsure I where I fall on the head covering debate. It is a long one. In this passage it is referring to showing submission to God but some also believe it is a sign of modesty.
Of course God is first and we all must submit to him and as ladies we must submit to our fathers or husbands. If this is the case a head covering should be warn during prayer and church. We should have open discussions with our families about what their opinion is on the topic. I tried this and my family really wasn’t having it. After showing my dad this passage he became a little bit more tolerant of the idea and is now allowing me to explore this on my own. My mom is not warming up as easily. For the past week or so I have been covering my head while I do my morning and evening prayers. I do feel a bit different when I do this. It seems that I am taking my prayers a bit more seriously and it is not just I hanging out with Christ, rather making a special time for he and I to come together and go over the needs and the sins of the day. Then there is the idea of modesty.
I do not think it is a secret that guys love hair. Hair is often a very sexy thing in the eyes of men and in the media. In movies right before a sex scene what happens? The lady takes her hair down and has beautiful thick long hair. There is nothing wrong with having beautiful hair but there is something to the idea of keeping your hair covered. The Bible says that any man who looks at woman lustfully has already committed adultery. These are our brothers in Christ Jesus. Is this what we want for them? Do we want them to sin in their hearts and have to repent for something they may not even realize they are doing? I don’t think I do. Cover your head may be a bit too dramatic but the same concept can be used with a scunchy. Keeping your hair tied up or covered will probably warrant more respect from guys and will display your modesty.
Now my number one reason for liking the idea of a head covering is that I am lazy! Especially when it comes to hair! I usually will wear my hair up anyway but if I can put a scarf or a hat over my head that would be awesome!
This is not a commandment more of guideline, an idea that should be fully thought-out, prayed about, and discussed.
As I have said I have not made my decision on the head covering but so far it doesn’t seem to be so bad. The only thing is, having the courage to do it in public. It definitely will raise questions especially if everyone knows you are Christian. They may ask when you converted to Islam. If this happens point them to this scriptures.
Dear Lord,
Please grant me the knowledge on doing what would be pleasing to you in all that I do. If it is your will to have me cover my head please give the courage to do so. It is important to me to live according to your will and if this is your will let it be done.
Thank you for your blessings.
Amen
