I believe it is attacking the mind. Making us think that we do not qualify for God's love. Making us think that we will burn in hell for all eternity no matter how hard we try to follow Jesus.
When we read the scripture "the gate to Heaven is narrow, but the road to hell is wide", we believe that we are going to hell.
Does not Romans 8:38-39 destroy that mode of thought?
