“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.” (Matthew 5:13 NASB1995)
We who profess faith in Jesus Christ are to be those who have died with Christ to sin and who are now walking in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in daily practice, though not necessarily in absolute sinless perfection, but no longer as slaves to sin for whom sin is our practice. We are to be those who are living holy lives, pleasing to God, and for whom righteousness and obedience are our practice. We are the salt of the earth.
We are not only to be those who are no longer living in sin, living to please our flesh, but we are to be those who are obeying our Lord, in practice, living to please God in all that we are and do and say. We are to be those who are setting the right example of what it means to be a Christian and a follower of Christ, and one who is of genuine biblical faith in the Lord Jesus, living for the purpose to do the will of God and to serve him with our lives.
And we are to be witnesses for Christ in sharing the truth of the gospel of our salvation with the people of the world, who preserve (like salt does) the word (the bread) of life in its truth and righteousness and wholeness and purity and correct biblical context. And we are to be those who guard and protect the Word of God, his gospel, from decay and from false ingredients inserted within which may distort and detract from its purity and purpose.
But somewhere along the line we may get off course, and we may lose our way, and we may be drawn in by the world to doing what should not be done by people of faith in Jesus Christ. And we may get distracted by the attractions of the world and therefore become “tasteless,” no longer good for anything which is of God and of his will and purpose for our lives; no longer having an impact on other people’s lives for the truth of the gospel of Christ.
And if that is where we remain, and if we do not genuinely repent and turn back to God in humble surrender to do his will, but we continue in our sins and in walks of disobedience to the Lord, then we will no longer have the hope of eternal life with God, according to the teachings of the Scriptures. For the Scriptures teach the church that if sin is what we practice, and not obedience to God, that we will not inherit eternal life with God.
But then there are people who make professions of faith in Jesus Christ who never have, in truth, repented of their sins and walked in obedience to the Lord, in practice. Although they may give lip service to the Lord, their professions of faith are superficial, for they never did die with Christ to sin, and so they were never cleansed of their sins, of the Spirit, and so they have continued in deliberate and habitual sin against the Lord Jesus and others.
Some of them are particularly addicted to specific sins which may come in waves, but in a series of repeated patterns of certain behaviors. And even though they profess faith in Jesus, they have not yet truly bowed to him as Lord, in humble surrender to do his will. But they keep on in their sinful patterns of behavior, even if sometimes they talk about needing to change. For they won’t do what is required of God for them to change direction.
But whether you were once salt, but then have since become tasteless, no longer good for anything which is of God and of his will and purpose for our lives, or you were never salt to begin with, but you faked your Christianity in order to appear outwardly as a Christian while you continued in sinful patterns of behavior, the truth is still the truth. We must deny self, die to sin daily, and walk in obedience to our Lord, which is the faith which saves. But if we make sin our practice, and not obedience, we will die without Christ.

Bombs are bursting. Night is falling.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Trust Him with your life today.
Make Him your Lord and your Savior.
Turn from your sin. Follow Jesus.
He will forgive you of your sin;
Cleanse your heart, made new within.
Men betraying: Our trust fraying.
On our knees to God we’re praying,
Seeking God to give us answers
That are only found in Him.
God is sovereign over all things.
Nothing from His mind escaping.
He has all things under His command,
And will work all for good.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Men deceiving: We’re believing
In our Lord, and interceding
For our nation and its people
To obey their God today.
He is our hope for our future.
For our wounds He offers suture.
He is all we need for this life.
Trust Him with your life today.
