RHEMA WORD vs. LOGOS WORD
There are two primary Greek words that refer to the Word of God in the New Testament. The first word "logos" refers to the written Word of God (scripture) and to Jesus, who is the living Word. John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word [logos], and the Word [logos] was with God, and the Word [logos] was God.” Also, Luke 8:11, Philippians 2:16, Hebrews 4:12, etc.
Example: God gave me a logos word this morning when I read Hebrews 4:12, "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart."
When I read the verse I received the revelation and was greatly impacted by the fact that the living Word will reveal the intentions of my heart and I should pay attention to what the Spirit is saying to me through the scriptures! [This word would apply to any Christian in the same way, but still must be revealed by the Holy Spirit for you to say, "I received a logos word from the Lord".
The second Greek word refers to a spoken Word from God, translated "rhema," a word that literally means a verbal "utterance."
When you receive a rhema word from God, a message is given to you (or a group) by the Holy Spirit through an individual or other means.
A modern day example might be like this, "God gave me a rhema word last year when I ran into Pastor Brian in the mall! He said that he knew by the Spirit of God that God was going to provide all of my college tuition within the next three months! And I was given a full scholarship in that third month!" This type word of knowledge happens quite frequently for those who flow in that gift.
* The rhema word can come through a scripture when it speaks to you and has direct and specific application to your situation or your specific need. Also known as receiving "a word from the Word."
