I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ. - Ghandi
So much of what is most noticeable and most vocal about Christendom today leaves me feeling so deflated and depressed. I see so much overt selfishness in the Tea Party movement, and suspect a good deal of hidden selfishness lurking below the surface of the Occupy Wall Street movement that it is disheartening and hopeless. Churched and unchurched Americans, some of the most materially privileged people to inhabit earth, marching to keep the wealth flowing so that they can take their vacations, drive their SUVs, and buy new flat screen TVs with surround sound.
Do I sound angry? Am I being a downer? Yes, I know I am and I apologize that my first blog post is so sallow. However, if we are to be like Christ, we need to examine what we believe and why we believe it before picking sides in a political/societal debate. Selfishness is not a Christian virtue.
If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn’t help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus is just as selfish as we are or we’ve got to acknowledge that he commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition. And then admit that we just don’t want to do it. - Stephen Colbert
