Proverbs 27:17

Proverbs 27:17 (NKJV)
“As a man sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend”

Iron touching iron denotes meaningful, close-knit interaction that makes both parties figuratively sharper—and the wiser for it. What the Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 1:11-12 underscores the importance of this dynamic:

“I long to see you so so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, to make you strong that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith.”

Here’s a way to hammer home the above to a congregation that speaks or understands a little Spanish:

The chemical symbol for “iron” is spelled “F-e”, which is an abbreviation for the Latin word, “ferrum”, as the ancient Romans would say it. Ferrum translates into Spanish as “hierro”. But, in a useful way, we have now inadvertently come across another Spanish word. The F-e, together, is spelled “Fe” and pronounced “Fay”, which we know means “La Fe” (or “faith” in English).

Yes, brothers and sisters, Fe (as faith) sharpens Fe! And we know that Paul would agree with that.
