I've got a DVD burning, so you get to hear what I actually think about something! You get to read the nonsensical rantings of someone who is barely coherent! Lucky You!
There are, on the surface, only two major parties in the United States. And that displeases a lot of people. That's understandable.
Why should everyone settle for just chocolate or vanilla? What if you want Double nutmeg caramel latte ice cream? With sprinkles on top? Who do you put your vote down for on a ballot if you want that?
And that's why I voted for Ralph Nader. I was young, I was dumb. So huzzah for me, I voted for a man without a chance, in a state where my vote was irrelevant regardless of whether I voted for Ralph or Al. But that's a different post.
This post is about why there are more than the two major parties, you just have to squint a bit to see them. And I'm not talking about the Green Party, the Libertarians, the Constitution Party, or the Socialist party. I am talking about the Democrats and the Republicans are the third party and I didn't realize it until a few years ago.
Take Republicans for example. They're not monolithic. There's the Big Business side of the party, there's the budget hawks, there's the Libertarian part of the party, there's the military hawks, and there's the religious side of the party.
On the other hand you have the Democrats. Oh the Democrats, how do I describe you without using expletives? You got your Greenie peaceniks, you got your Big Labor, you got your civil libertarians, you got your minorities of all stripes, LGBT, African Americans, and Hispanics, and of course women.
And that's not even close to all of them. I know I've left out a dozen of them, and one of the few saving graces in not having readers is that I won't have a lot of people writing me to tell me how many I've missed.
The point is that I think these constituencies represent real third, fourth and fifth parties. I think that you can fit nearly all* parties into these constituencies of the Dems and Repubs.
"But Ajnin you handsome devil you", you say. "This isn't the bill of goods you sold me at the beginning! When I see a ballot in November,(those of you in the United States, over 18, and not guilty of a felony, void offer in Florida), There's only two major parties on there, not these constituencies, you silver tongued dog you!"
That's true, observant and honest reader. That's also not the ballot you should be looking at for these constituencies on. It should be the one in the primaries that garners your attention for people who represent these constituencies.
That's when the person on the November ballot is selected. And that's when you can select a nominee who is more attune to your beliefs. That's when you get a chance to campaign for them and try to get out the vote for them.
During the primary you get all 31 flavors. But if you wait until November to vote, don't act surprised that the person you get a chance to vote for is kinduva a dull looking vanilla. Or as better people than me have put it, the choice between the lesser of two evils. Anyway, done burning, done blogging a screed for the importance of primary voting for this morning. G'night everyone!
* If you are looking for a place for people in the natural law party, keep looking, cause I can't find it either.
