I know about a bible that has 66 books in it and that teaches from one end to the other that God, under no moral obligation to save any of his rebellious creatures, chose a people for himself, and purchased them, with the passion and blood of his own Son. The God of this bible is sovereign, and he does whatsoever he wills, and no creature has any right to ask him a reason for what he does. What I want to know is, is there another bible somewhere that teaches something different, that God merely made salvation possible, providing a potential salvation that can only be realized and made actual by the will and autonomous decision of fallen man? Is there another bible that tells of another Jesus, who, because he was PC and egalitarian and also just a little helpless, provided a broad way that reached part way to the kingdom of God rather than a narrow way that reaches all the way? Is there another bible that teaches the doctrine of man's sacrosanct and inviolable will, that teaches that man is the one who ultimately elects God, and not the other way around? Is there another bible which portrays God as some kind of cosmic nice guy who has to stand impotently by, pitifully wringing his hands because worldlings refuse his tearful pleas to come to his Son? Is there another bible that teaches that man, the fallen creature, is really sovereign, the master of his own fate, the director of his own destiny? Is there another bible that teaches that man can defy his Maker, that the clay can declaim against the potter, that man, "the measure of all things," is in the driver's seat?
Of course there is no other bible. So all those who would know God and Christ in truth must go to the true and only bible. And the only God they will find there is the sovereign God of electing love, the only Christ the Christ who died to redeem his lambs and sheep, his own people, whom he calls by name, and who know his voice.
This is good news for me, because I'm not spiritual or wise or clever enough to have come to Christ otherwise.
This is welcome news to me, because such a sovereign God and King, who spoke the galaxies into being and formed man of the dust and breathed the breath of life into him, can be trusted to finish the work he began, to keep me in the faith, despite my waywardness, and to bring me ultimately to be with Christ and all the redeemed saints in glory.
So, if you love Jesus, how on earth can this not be good news to you too?
