I used to be very active on one of the biggest forums on the internet. They had a religion section dominated by atheists and a few Christians trying to stand for the faith.
I find that Atheists tend to ridicule more than others. I think they believe their mocking of the faith can somehow move it out of existence. It has always seemed to me that all this is stemmed from a kind of anger I know nothing of. Their is a stark sense of harsh bitterness behind every post of the atheists I discoursed with. Most were Christians at one time from various sects, leaving the faith after coming to some kind of epiphany that "it is absurd". I've always wanted to get them in person, and push some magic button so that they would be honest with me. I'd like to know what happened in their lives to spawn such hatred.
I think some never truly had a faith to begin with, it was merely something they did on Sunday. What little was left was not an issue to break off completely. I believe the bulk had a raging hate against God. Most cannot stand the God they see in the old testament, citing events of injustice and cruelty. They take it upon themselves to decide what is just. This burning hatred of God is not disbelief, but a yearning for revenge. What is the best way to hate God? Pretend he doesn't exist and make yourself god. I think most atheists get a shallow sense of fufillment from this. Though the torment they must feel when they are alone must be unbearable.
I eventually left that forum because the enviornment was simply too harsh. I do thank the Lord for the experience, as it has helped me become a better apologist for the faith. Pray for the Atheists, that the Lord will bring them Home.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Have Mercy on me a Sinner.
