Those in power, be it by way of religion or government of man, fear losing the support of the masses. Would people find that without contact, particularly with organized religion, that they can have a personal relationship with God and each other by elimination of the middleman?
Hierarchy builds upon itself. Man is never content. A tribe will follow an alpha inhabitant. Tribes will amalgamate for greater protection under a new level of combined leadership. Those tribal constituencies eventually become provinces and states and they in turn become countries and even empires, always with the many under the few. Not content with that level of power some then seek a global government over all. The next step beyond global of course is to proclaim a level of government akin to God.
Such is the way of man. God on the other hand, sent a poor unassuming man who simply said don't rebel against these men who seek power and glory who have built a world in their own image, but instead treat each other as equals and love all as self. His 'church' was meant to work outside the systems of man.
What mankind does within government and religion goes against the principles of the Kingdom of God. In the Kingdom there is no gain at the expense of another. Gain is made at the expense of oneself. Christianity unfortunately, has adopted the same governance as the world of man. It rejected the Kingdom long ago when it went into partnership with a government of man. The governing hierarchies became of one mind, not of God, but of the world made in man's image.
Can we do without those middlemen that have given themselves positions of power and authourity over man instead of as equals simply loving all as self? Is it necessary to be trained to follow their religious constitutions rather than the will of God? Can a time of separation from their leadership cause their influence to weaken? Probably. Need it weaken a relationship with God, let alone each other? Not likely.
