Prayer is communicating with our Heavenly Father with the Holy Spirit through Christ Jesus.
1 Tim 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
There is no need to pray to St. Jude, Mary or any other saint. No offence to anyone that does but this is what I believe the Bible teaches. The arugment to this is its like asking your friend to pray for you. That these saints are closer to Jesus and you will have a better chance to get your prayer answered. In that case when I ask my friend to pray for me it is like two children coming to the father for a common interest. We both would pray to the Father throuhg Christ. I would not pray to my friend to ask Jesus something. I would not pray to a saint I know who has passed away to ask Jesus something. Can I ask what kind of faith does that show God you have in him answering your prayer? God wants to hear from you. You are one of his Children, he loves you and will answer your prayers. And remember 1 Tim 2:5 above. There is only one mediator.
Proverbs 15:8 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.
Matt 7:7-11 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
Prayer is a serious part of our spiritual battle. God promises 1 Cor 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
Here he tells Peter to pray to keep him from entering into temptation, so prayer can be your escape God has promised you. Also see our spiritual weapons, prayer is one of them.
Matt 26:40-41 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Make sure your heart is right with God. Don't have a selfish heart. If all your worried about is self gain you might not get your prayers answered. The Bible teaches how Christians should feed the hungry, help the needy and etc.... Thats a whole other study.
Proverbs 21:13 Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.
Make sure you are saved. There are examples in the Bible of men who prayed seeking salvation and God sent someone to tell them. I believe the Bible teaches if your lost and pray for something other than salvation you should not expect an answer untill you accept Christ as your saviour.

Come bodly to the throne of grace, remember you are talking to the creator of the universe, but remember you are his children. Don't be scared to ask God for your needs or guidence and etc.... but remember James 4:2-3 (own lust), and Luke 18:10-14 (humble)
Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
