I have been studying Psalm 5 -The backdrop is that King David has gone into hiding from his son Absolum who thirsts for David's blood, how ever David has issued a decree that his son is not to be harmed. Having said this here are my notes.
How should we pray?
When should we pray? Psalm 5:3 – In the morning O Lord, you hear my voice. In the morning I lay down my requests before you and wait in expectation.
In the evening – Psalm 6:6 – I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears.
David prayed with fervency – Psalm 5:2
David prayed with persistency – Psalm 5:3
David prayed with expectancy – Psalm 5:3; James 1:1-6
Some are verbal – Psalm 5:1; Psalm 5:3
Here the statement “lay my requests” is the Hebrew word Arak as used in Genesis 22:9 by Abraham when he put the wood on the alter at mount Morah. It means to place in order. David’s words were well thought out and spoken in well resoned terms
Some are unspoken Sighs – Psalm 5:1 the word Hagig is used meaning to mutter –whisper or muse. Because sometimes we don’t know how to pray or that the spirit is….too full of things and don’t know where to start. So we go Ooooooooh! In a deep growl like moan.
Some are despite cries – Psalm5:2 – As I have studied this chapter I see that for the first 8 verses David make no petition. They are David preparing his heart for prayer. It also shows us that there are three areas of truth we need to see before we approach God in prayer.
To know who God is 5:1-3 – David shows us that he had a personal relationship with God and that he realized who was the real king over Israel.
Jehovah – The covenant keeping God
Elohim – The God of creation.
We are to come to him in humble submission to His Lordship and in reverence of power and as creator and confidence he keeps his word
