Psalm 4:6-8 6 There are many who say, “Who will show us any good?” Lord, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us. 7 You have put gladness in my heart, More than in the season that their grain and wine increased. 8 I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. | News broadcasts are replete with commentary about how one political party can purportedly deliver benefits to society more than another. Yet, even members of the touted “better” side often complain that “good” is elusive. The world seeks solution from its own rumination and compilation of “wisdom”. Yet, the Word of God calls to humanity to receive the true source of good. Psalm 4:6: “Lord, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us”. Per 1 John 1:5, “This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” Therefore, 1 John 1:7 further elucidates: “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” When we wonder how is the highest “good” obtained, we have it illustrated here. The guiding light of God, through Jesus, is that good. And, in fact, when we live accordingly in this light, true harmony between individuals is realized/lived. This is so “good” that Jesus reminds us what we are immediately to do so that good might prevail around us (Matthew 5:14-16): “14 You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” |
