God’s Sovereignty: The Parting of the Sea and Obedience

trust.jpeg

When God parted the Red Sea, it was a miracle. It was also a message—a picture of His power to save and the path we must take in response.

In Exodus 14, God delivers His people, the Israelites, from slavery in Egypt. He opens a path through the sea, showing His sovereign power. No one else could have done this. The people didn’t part the sea. They didn’t make a way. God did everything to open the way—just as He does in salvation.

God Chooses, God Calls

Jesus said,

“All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.” (John 6:37)

This means that God the Father has chosen a people and given them to Jesus. These people, drawn by the Father, come to Christ. They don’t come because of how strong or smart they are—they come because God is calling them.

In the picture of the parted sea, we see this truth. God makes the way. But the people still have to walk.

Faith Means Moving Forward

Those who believed God stepped into the sea. That took trust. There were walls of water on both sides. It looked dangerous. But God said, “Go,” and they obeyed. This is faith in action—not earning salvation, but responding to it.

“By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land...” (Hebrews 11:29)

Their feet moved because their hearts trusted.

Two Kinds of People

Now imagine this scene:

Some people are standing on the dry land, watching the others walk through the water. They yell out:

“Hey! What do you think you’re doing? Are you trying to earn your salvation by obeying what God says?”

The ones in the water respond:

“No—we trust Him. He said this is the way, so we follow. We don’t trust in our walk—we trust in His Word.”

These two groups show a deep truth:

  • One group uses "faith" as an excuse not to obey.
  • The other group shows true faith through obedience.

Jesus spoke of these two paths:

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction... But the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” (Matthew 7:13–14)

The wide path says, “Just believe, and live how you want.”
The narrow path says, “If you believe, follow Him—no matter what.”

Following Is Not Earning

Let’s be clear: we are not saved by obedience, but we obey because we are saved. True belief leads to action. Jesus said,

“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word.” (John 14:23)

To obey Jesus is to trust Him. Not perfectly, but truly.

Word List

WordMeaningExample Sentence
SovereigntyGod’s complete power and control over everything.“The parting of the sea shows God’s sovereignty.”
ObeyTo do what someone says.“The people obeyed God and walked into the sea.”
FaithTrust in someone or something, even when you can’t see everything.“Faith means following God, even when it’s hard.”
PathA way or road you walk on.“God made a path through the sea for His people.”
TrustTo believe that someone is true and dependable.“We trust Jesus because He always keeps His promises.”
SalvationBeing saved by God from sin and death.“Salvation is a gift that comes through Jesus alone.”

Final Thought

The parted sea is not just a miracle from the past—it’s a picture of how God saves today. He makes the way. We trust Him. And because we trust Him, we follow—even when the world stands on the shore and laughs.
We hold fast to the faith that God has given us as a gift. We are a love gift to Christ, given by the Father in response to what Jesus accomplished—He paid the full price for our sins.
Let us never forget: God is not obligated to show grace to anyone. No one deserves His favor, for all have sinned.
That’s why all of salvation—even our response to it—is already prepared by God’s sovereign will. We are simply catching up to what He has already purposed.
This is not a simple plan—it is the perfect and powerful will of God being fulfilled.

Which group are you in?

Don’t just trust what we have heard—test it.
Is what we have heard from Jesus real in our life?
Do our attitudes, actions, and words reflect Him—especially in how we treat others and, above all, how we respond to God Himself?
