How Do You Find Out God's Will for Your Life?
Ephesians 1:17-19
17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: 18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, 19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power
God has called us to Himself for the very purpose of revealing not only His great love for us, but also to reveal His will to us. He desires to give us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him so He can reveal His purposes to us for our personal lives and for the corporate Church.
He grants us a spirit of wisdom and revelation to reveal these things through the knowledge of Him. It is only granted to us in the deep and intimate knowledge of Him. How is that knowledge gained? Through prayer and communion with the Holy Spirit and studying the Word of God.
The Holy Spirit's purpose is to reveal Jesus to us, and Jesus' purpose is to reveal the Father and restore and reconcile us back to Him through the work of the cross. They are One working together in unity to bring us into one divine purpose, that is, reconciliation through the blood of Jesus. (reconciliation = restoring us back to an intimate relationship with Himself - that's how the image and character of God is developed in us and wisdom is given to us)
His purpose is that you be knowledgeable of Him - that you know Him intimately. That's how you receive wisdom and revelation and understanding of what He's trying to do in your life. He has to reveal that to you, and the wisdom of God is given to and laid up for the righteous.
In other words, in order for Him to bring you into an understanding of your life and His purposes for your life, you have to be righteous. He first has to develop character in you - the character of Christ. Why? Because Matthew 7:6 says, Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. So unless you are allowing God to develop character in you, then His wisdom is no good to you.
The wisdom of God is holy, pure, and undefiled (James 3:17). So how can He give something that's holy to someone who's not holy? He's not giving you something that's pure unless you're walking in purity.
Proverbs 2:6-7 - For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of His mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous... not the unrighteous. So your knowledge of God is determined by your walk with God, and it's through the knowledge of God that His will is revealed (Eph. 1:17). But how can He give you His intimate knowledge if you don't have an intimate relationship with Him? Do you tell a stranger personal stuff about you? Of course not unless you're crazy
. You only reveal that information to someone you know personally. God is the same way.His wisdom is hid from the unrighteous.
Job 28:28
And unto man He said, Behold (look), the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
This is the mystery of His will He's trying to reveal to you: Fear the Lord. Depart from evil. Live holy. Come clean before the Lord. That's wisdom. Why is that wisdom? Because God said if you do that, THEN I will receive you and be a Father unto you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty (2 Cor. 6:17-18).
His will is that you be clean and live holy. That's the spirit of wisdom and revelation. That's how the eyes of your understanding become enlightened and the hope of His calling on your life is revealed to you. He's called you to a holy calling. Therefore, you must live holy for that holy calling to be revealed to you.
Since God is holy, He accomplishes all that He does through holiness. So the purpose to which He's called you can only be revealed and fulfilled through holiness. That's what God is trying to get you to see today, and that holiness can only come through intimacy with the Father. So seek the Lord until He comes and teaches you righteousness (Hosea 10:12).
