Figs

Sunday, August 02, 2009, 7:35 a.m. – I woke to this song:

Be near me, Lord Jesus!
I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever
And love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children
In Thy tender care
And take us to heaven
To live with Thee there.

Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. I read Jeremiah 24:

Two Baskets of Figs
1 After Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim king of Judah and the officials, the craftsmen and the artisans of Judah were carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the LORD showed me two baskets of figs placed in front of the temple of the LORD. 2 One basket had very good figs, like those that ripen early; the other basket had very poor figs, so bad they could not be eaten.
3 Then the LORD asked me, "What do you see, Jeremiah?"
"Figs," I answered. "The good ones are very good, but the poor ones are so bad they cannot be eaten."

4 Then the word of the LORD came to me: 5 "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Like these good figs, I regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I sent away from this place to the land of the Babylonians. 6 My eyes will watch over them for their good, and I will bring them back to this land. I will build them up and not tear them down; I will plant them and not uproot them. 7 I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the LORD. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.

8 " 'But like the poor figs, which are so bad they cannot be eaten,' says the LORD, 'so will I deal with Zedekiah king of Judah, his officials and the survivors from Jerusalem, whether they remain in this land or live in Egypt. 9 I will make them abhorrent and an offense to all the kingdoms of the earth, a reproach and a byword, an object of ridicule and cursing, wherever I banish them. 10 I will send the sword, famine and plague against them until they are destroyed from the land I gave to them and their fathers.' "

My Understanding: I see a parallel between Jeremiah 24 and Revelation 13:

And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. He had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on his horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. 2The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority. 3One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was astonished and followed the beast. 4Men worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, "Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?"

5The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months. 6He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. 7He was given power to make war against the saints and to conquer them. And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. 8All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world.

9He who has an ear, let him hear.
10If anyone is to go into captivity,
into captivity he will go.
If anyone is to be killed with the sword,
with the sword he will be killed. This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of the saints…

This time spoken of in Revelation 13 and in Jeremiah 24 is coming soon. All people will come under the authority of this beast. God will give him power to make war against the saints and to conquer them for forty-two months. This is paralleled with Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon taking the children of Israel into exile.

Right now we have people who are definitely following the Lord Jesus, people who are not believers in Christ Jesus, and then we have those that are riding the fence, so to speak, which is a big portion of the Christian community today, i.e. the Laodicean-type church of today. Yet, when this beast begins to exercise his authority, there will be no more riding the fence. There will be two divisions of people – good figs or bad figs – period!

Yet, for the “good figs,” i.e. those in true relationship with Jesus Christ, even though God is going to allow us to go through this difficult time, he still promises, I believe, to be with us, to watch over us for our good, and to bring us to heaven. He will build us up, encourage our hearts, give us strength, wisdom, direction, and perseverance in much trial. I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the LORD. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.

You Will Be Our God / Travis Cottrell and David Moffitt

I Chr 16:9-12, 14-15a; I Chr 16:34 (NASB)

You have kindled a burning desire in our hearts to know You, Lord;
There’s a passion within us to be where You are forevermore;
So we cry out for mercy, we lay our lives down
To seek You while You may be found.

And You will be our God; we’ll be your people forever
Because You have lov’d us and called us Your own;
You will reign in our hearts alone; You will be our God, You will be our God.

Let our worship become an unquenchable fire, a holy blaze,
An extravagant love, a relentless desire to bring You praise;
Overwhelmed by Your mercy, in awe of Your grace,
We’ll follow You all of our days. And, You will be our God…
Forever and ever, Forever
