As we learned in the Garden, good and evil existed side by side within the spirit of God of which we are a part (otherwise the tree would not have been there). Our choice, since that time, is which nature we follow, the one which is servitude to God and each other in need, or evil which is self-centred. It was never a problem when we were unaware of those choices pre-fall as we couldn't be purposely selfish, simply because we were not self-aware.
