Proverbs 31: 4-5
It is not for kings, Lemuel—it is not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer, lest they drink and forget what has been decreed, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.
Proverbs 31 is a very popular chapter in the Bible for what it says about women. But there are few verses before it gets into the rubies. Lemuel’s mother was trying to teach him about the things he should and should not do, the things he should look out for. Of course like any other mother she wanted him to have a wonderful wife but there were some things she didn’t want for her son. One of those things was alcohol.
Anyone who has ever seen anyone get drunk knows that often when alcohol comes into a situation, things can go from good to bad or bad to worse. Now I have not found anything in scripture that says you cant drink at all but you should not drink excessively. You should not drink to get drunk because poor choices will be made.
Often when people drink they become more promiscuous, aggressive, and reckless. Are these adjectives that you would use to describe someone who is walking The Almighty? Not me. Those are adjectives that I would use to describe someone who is sad and lonely and ignorant of the love of their heavenly father.
For those of you who need a more worldly reason on why you should not drink excessively you should know that alcohol can lead to tissue (including brain tissue) damage, poor judgment, poor cell health, and weight gain.
What is most important to you? Drinking with your “friends,” destroying the Holy Spirit’s temple, or listening to Lemuel’s mother? Personally, I will stay in my right frame of mind to live according the word.
Dear Lord,
I ask that you please bless your children with the ability to say no to alcohol. We know that it is bad for us but so often peer pressure gets in the way of our good judgment. Please help us to live according to your plan for us.
Thank you for your blessings
Amen
I put quotations around the word friends because, I have many stories of people feeling as though the people they hang out with will not want to be around them if they don’t drink and it may turn into a loss of friendships. Your true friends will support your choice especially if you are making it for the right reasons. Jesus is the best reason to not drink a ton.
