Hello everyone,
I’m Japanese and currently serving my church "Live Church Sunza" in Japan as a full-time staff. I was born and raised in the UK. I have a heart for the Japanese people, and especially for those who got saved in a foreign country, but are unable to get connected to a church when they are back in Japan.
I would like to share some stuffs about Japan, and ask to keep this nation in your prayers.
Christianity in Japan is a religious minority, which constitutes about 1 million people. This is less than 1% of the population of Japan. Christianity was introduced by the Roman Catholic missionaries in 1549. In spite of the long history, the number of Christians never broke the wall of 1% up to now.
There are many reasons to this; and this will become another great discussion so I’ll keep it our from this topic just for now.
Nowadays, approximately 1,600 Japanese people get saved in a foreign country, and return back to Japan. (Of course, more Japanese are saved but still lives outside Japan.) Unfortunately, 80% of those people lose their faith and refuse to go to church within a few years. The reasons are such as:
- Facing culture shocks after returning back to Japan
- Can’t find any churches back home
- Religious conflict with their families
- Due to the busy lifestyle/job
- Don’t have any Christian friends in Japan
- Don’t know how to share their own testimonies with people
- The culture and atmosphere in the church are so different from what they experienced outside Japan
- Don’t have any opportunities to attend any kind of bible study group
etc.
It is generally said that “spreading Christianity in Japan is very hard”.
Well, yes Japanese people are tend to by shy, and not open to foreign religions... there may be multiple reasons to conclude that “it’s hard” But I don’t really believe in that because nothing is impossible with God, and He has done great things to me and my church in Japan as well.
It’s the matter of taking action with faith. So posting this thread is one of the action I’m taking, and believing that God will provide His help for saving the Japanese people.
My church “Live Church Sunza” is a Japanese pastored church, but it is very international. Services are in Japanese, but we also provide English and Portuguese translation. We sing songs from Hillsong, Planetshakers, Chris Tomlin, etc in Japanese, as well as our own original worship songs. You can watch our service online.
It is one of the church that is prepared to accept Japanese Christians who got saved outside Japan. We hope that we could help out people who needs to be connected to a church to live strongly with faith in Japan.
Blessings from Japan!
