I'm definitely no Activist, but in my early 20's I did volunteer about 3-4 days a week, for an hour to two each day, at a no-kill animal shelter for about 10 and a half months.
I could never intentionally kill an animal, unless I knew for sure that it was going to die, and to simply put it out...
