I'm going to come at this from a Godly and godly angle. First of all, for the most part, neither side in a government serves the people as a whole, which of course runs contrary to following God's will. So if God's will isn't served, then who's will is being served? The sons of God that still rule all the nations, save one (where the people may not be holy, but the land is). These gods that focus on self-interest, have always relished having the people look up to them, and of course, so do the human underlings that serve them. The thing is, is that these gods that have ruled since Babel, know their days are numbered. But they also know that as long as they keep the people distracted from the wisdom and council of the Kingdom, they need not fear extinction.
So the religious world, at their guidance, is filled with confusion and shortsightedness, while the secular world is also kept in chaos. Both to distract humans from pursuing the will of God, which is to forward the Gospel of the Kingdom which teaches us that we now have an alternative to this world's ways. Remember what was said to us about when the end would come? It involves only this one Gospel (Matthew 24: 14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come).
So don't expect change or an idyllic lifestyle anytime soon. We need to remember the only way to overcome this world, is to no longer follow it. We were freed millennia ago to follow a new world and way of life if we so choose. If we do so, and spread that Gospel as commanded, the days of the sons of God are shortened and creation moves forward.
