Abortion

Hey guys! With this being my first post I thought I should start as I plan to continue, controversially! Abortion- a much debated topic, often shrouded by myth and rumour. Through all the facts and figures thrown about by both sides, I thought it best to take a step back and see what the Bible actually says on this extremely relevant issue.
In today's world, within social circles, it is considered the norm to have a long string of partners. It is also often the case that your popularity is judged by how many guys of girls you can pick up. For many, I guess I'm stating the obvious. This is the way society has evolved and is unlikely to change, but perhaps it was worth me setting the scene. With this being a blog about abortion, I might as well just get down to the nitty-gritty of the next part of the storyboard. Sex.
Yes, we can all remember the times when we used to have a fit of giggles when a school teacher started talking about 'doing it', for want of a better phrase! As we grow up and are climbing up the social ladder, we realise just how influential sex is and many look at it as a casual and purely pleasurable past-time. Unfortunately, this has its consequences, moving on to the next scene. Babies. This is often the climax of the story, the turning point of the couple, or the single mother. I find it interesting that it is only in this part of the story, where morals and ethics are really called into question, and not anywhere before. But then again that's not what this blog is about, is it? Backtracking to the start of this scene. This is probably where the people concerned start to ask themselves questions like this ,' How will this life effect my life?' 'Am I doing more harm than good by bringing this kid into the world?" 'Is it really worth it?" I don't know how they answer these questions. What I do know is that just under 200,000 babies were legally aborted last year in England and Wales (Department of Health) meaning that at least 200,000 mothers made the decided the cost was to high.
Deuteronomy 30:19 'I am now giving you the choice between life and death, between God’s blessing and God’s curse, and I call heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Choose life!`
When a 2-year-old starts nursery they can’t choose where they go. At a 1-year-old's birthday party they don’t decide the colour of the cake. When a baby is christened they don’t even get the choice of their own name. This isn't inequality or injustice, it's just common sense! So an unborn baby has no chance of arguing on behalf of its own life (despite the obvious communication barrier). This decision then falls to the parents and their own conscience. The majority of couples or single mums are ready for the baby, but the sad reality of this present day is that the number of people who are having unwanted pregnancies is on a steep and dramatic incline, with abortion rates climbing in their wake. If you were in the position of a young teenage girl, with a life of oppurtunities in fornt of you, but another life inside you, what would you do? The Bible is quite clear on what God wants us to do.
'Choose life!`
Psalm 139:13-16 'You made my whole being;
you formed me in my mother’s body.
I praise you because you made me in an
amazing wonderful way.
What you have done is wonderful.
I know this very well.
You saw my bones being formed
as I took shape in my mother’s body.
When I was put together there,
you saw my body as it was formed.
All the days planned for me
were written in your book
before I was one day old.`
This passage of scripture stresses how glorious and magnificent God is and how uniquely we are created. To think that the God of the universe, the maker of the heavens and the earth designs us when we are in our mother’s stomach is an idea beyond our comprehension. To think that He has, also, already mapped out our life and purpose should send shivers up our spine, just imagining the things we are destined to do! All of this before we even step foot on the earth! Doesn't this demonstrate the sanctity of life in a wonderful way. Shouldn't we be honoured that God shows His love for us far before we even know of Him! This psalm perfectly words the connection between child and mother and the holiness of the mother’s body that God (Yes God) chooses to work in it to form a child. This is why the Bible says that we are made in ‘God’s image’ because before birth he created us like him. If you think about it in this way however unlikely it maybe, abortion is, not only killing an innocent baby, but also murdering something that is God’s handiwork.
Luke 12:6-7 'Five sparrows are sold for only two pennies, and God does not forget any of them. But God even knows how many hairs you have on your head. Don’t be afraid. You are worth much more than many sparrows.`
When you have a unwanted baby, some mothers, who have an abortion, and their partners, think of the child as an obstacle that can be overcome, a burden that will just weigh them down. Well even if you they or, more importantly, society, don't respect the baby's birth-right to life, God values it more than anyone could ever imagine. God does not think of any one as unimportant or just an error. On the contrary, He has a purpose for each and every one of our lives whether we can see it or not.
Romans 8:38-39 'For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.'
Remember that God loves you and has a purpose for you and every human life on this planet; born or otherwise!
