“M-mother always said I was an unlucky p-pup.” Brian was a small gray wolf covered from head to tail in fresh powder, he staggered through the howling blizzard that whipped about his packs mountain territory like a cruel banshee, as the runt of his pack he was chased out when the food ran slim. “Goddess Selene, Please don't let me die out here. ” Brian's ears perked up as his nose picked up the scent of smoke and fresh meat. “Mother might have been w-wrong for once, thank you Goddess.” His hunger outweighed the fatigue slowly sapping his strength, his eye held a feral glow to them as he forced his body to trot closer and closer to the scent. A small glow reached his eyes as he approached a small shack, he could smell the meat as if was hanging in for of him, “T-that heavenly smell could o-only b-be rabbit.”

Brian frowned as he saw a cottage before him, a single door was all that adorned the plain wooden building, Goddess, you are cruel to test me in such a way. Brian looked at the large mound of snow that blocked him from the only entrance to the cottage, Wait and die or dig. Brian began to dig, his paws tossing up the loose snow easily as he tore through the first layers of snow blocking him from his meal. The blizzard picked up with even greater force, the high winds chilled the small wolf to his core, each time he kicked the snow out from the hole it seemed more swept inside to keep him out. “I c-c-can't feel the s-s-now.” Brian whined as the numbness settled in his forepaws, the thought of warmth and food keep him going as he struggled to dig with his limp forepaws, Come on, Brian! Don't die when we are so close. Don't be the useless weakling your mother and your pack made you out to be. DIG!!!

Brian dug with an incredible amount of determination, he began to shiver uncontrollably as his frenzied digging carried on into the evening. An hour had passed and Brian was exhausted, his left eye had frozen shut and his breathing was labored, the scent of cooked rabbit teased his nostrils as he struggled to even lift his head to check his progress. I can see the door but I can't even move. It would have been nice to taste that rabbit before I go. Fatigue overwhelmed Brian as his collapsed against the hard wood door of the cottage, his eye closed as he felt the snow begin to blanket him, I guess you get the last laugh, Mother. His body completely was immobilized by the cold, he could only listen to the howling snow as his body refused to respond to his commands.

Even in something as simple as digging I was too weak. I don't want to die this way, if my pack mate were here they would probably shovel more snow on me. I can't believe this is how my life ends! Not even a whole two days away from my pack and I am dying in front of a free meal. This cannot be it, I never even got the chance to mate, or even try to fight for a better pack position. I lived for nothing and did nothing. Brian's heart tugged at his frozen-shut eyes with no results, his heart cried in pain as he laid there with nothing but his thoughts andstomach churning hopelessness to keep him company. I can't even cry......Is this really what I deserved for being the smallest and the weakest wolf? If I had a pack I wouldn't let any on of them suffer like this, I would do anything for a chance to be the alpha.

Brian felt something warm cover his muzzle and pulled him out of the snow, “Hey I found it.” A gruff voice reached Brian's ears, he attempted to whimper as he felt his body being moved by someone he couldn't see. What is this? Something has me in its jaws? Is that sound? Brian pondered as a light cackling sound teased his ears, he felt something large and warm curl up against him, light breathing mixed in with the sound of cackling. After a few minutes the feeling returned to his face and forepaws, he slowly raised his furry head and opened his eyes, taking in his surrounding.

A fire place provided the cackling that continued to tickle his ears, he could smell the scent of rabbit and other fainter scents wafting around the building. “I am inside? Why?” Brian wondered aloud as he slowly attempted to stand up, a large paw pressed on to his back and forced him back down. “Hey Hey little hero, no getting up till I say so. We just pulled your frozen tail from the snow, rest now.” Brian turned his head toward the voice and gasped loudly, a massive black and white dog stared back at him with large hazel eyes, she was over double his height and his weight. “Did I frighten ya little hero? Don't be afraid all I want to show ya is my thanks. What is the name of my hero?” Her deep voice echoed in the small cottage.

Brian attempted to keep still but his body was shivering with fear, “M-m-m-m-my name is Brian. W-w-w-who are you? I have n-n-never seen a wolf like you.” Brian asked cautiously. She chuckled with a deep baritone, her entire frame shook with each breath, “I am no wolf, little hero. The name's Selma, pleased to meet ya. I am called a New fun land by my best friend. ” Selma licked Brian's muzzle affectionately, Brian felt oddly at ease with the massive canines affections, “We really owe you Brian. All that digging ya did on the outside freed up enough snow for us to push the door open. We have been stuck in here for days, we were eating our last meal when you rescued us.”

Brian stomach growled as he remembered the very reason he nearly froze to death, rolling over on his back and curling his paws to his chest. “Please allow me to have some food?” Brian stayed in the submissive position while looking to Selma for a response, Selma raised a single eye brow in confusion, “You can have some but why are ya laying like that, little hero?” Selma used one of her paws to roll the wolf back on his belly. “The weaker ones must submit before asking any stronger wolf for his meal or anything else.” By that time all that is left was hair and bones.

The loud crunch of boots against the soft snow made Selma's tail perk up. “ He is here. Brian, be nice my best friend, he is a little odd looking and can't talk well but he is a really really nice guy.” A large man covered in a plaid coat walked through the door carrying a large boar over his shoulder, His muscular frame and confident steps gave Brian no doubt as to who was in charge. The man gave Brian a warm smile and walked into another room within the cottage, Wow. That must be the alpha, he brought food but as large as they are I might not get a turn to eat. Brian began to whimper at his dilemma, “Selma, when will we know when he is done eating his share?” Brian asked softly, his eyes downcast in front of the massive female, Selma laughed and nuzzled his face again.

“Brian, this isn't a wolf pack. My best friend is in charge and we are equal under him, stop worrying and watch what he does after getting the food. Listen.” Selma watched with a grin as Brian ears perked up at the sound of meat sizzling. “Ooh. What is he doing to the meat, it smells different.....Better than Boar normally smells.” Brian licked his lips and continued to sniff the air.

An hour later........

The large man opened the door and placed two bowls down in front of the canines and gave Selma a quick scratch behind her ears. “I see your taking a liking to the little trooper that dug us out. He seems pretty tame to be a wolf, kinda small too but what the heck if he wants to stick around I wouldn't mind keeping him. If anyone asks I will say he is a husky puppy.” Brian looked at Selma and cocked his head to the side, “What did he say?” Selma grinned and walked over to him, leaning into his ear, “I don't really understand him that well but I think he wants to know if ya want to be his best friend too. If you want to stay just walk over and press ya nose into his hand.” “Really? I can stay with your pack and live here?” Brian voice was filled with excitement, his heart jumped with joy as he walkedIt's carefully to the large man and prodded his hand with the tip of his muzzle.

“Oh your a friendly little fella aren't you?” The man reached down and scratched the wolf behind the ears, Oooooo oooo ooooo that feels so nice, don't stop. “Well I guess you can stay little fella. I think my girl could use the company of another critter.” The man stopped the scratching, much to Brian's disappointment, he walked up the stairs while yawing loudly. Selma wagged her tail happily and began to eat, Brian looked on silently his stomach grumbling loudly, “Are ya gonna eat or are ya shy about dining with a lovely female?” Brian averted his gaze and blushed, “Its not that I am just waiting for my turn to eat after you get your fill.”

Rolling her eyes, Selma pushed his bowl in from of him, “This is not a wolf pack, in this pack the big man is first and we are equal, so eat or I will um.... send ya back outside with nothin to eat.” Selma growled playfully but her mammoth size and deep voice made the threat seem more real than it was, Brian whimpered quietly before eating his food ravenously. “Selma, this is good! I never tasted Boar like this, your best friend did something great to this food. It so firm and chewy and the things sprinkled on it are really tasty too.” Brian licked the bowl clean, This is the first time I got to eat with a pack mate, the crows even ate before I did back at my old pack. I really like this type of pack.

Brian nuzzled against Selma and began to lick her muzzle thankfully, “I never been in a pack like this before. You two are very kind to take in an outsider like me.” Brian nuzzled closer against her and began to take comfort in the feeling of his new pack mate's fuzzy body, Selma sighed joyfully and nuzzled him back, “All that flattery and I would think ya were trying to be my mate, little hero. Follow me, I have one last thing to show ya tonight.”

Selma's large body trotted up the stairs quickly, She may be large but the way she carries herself is beautiful. I can't believe someone so powerful could be kinda to a smaller wolf like me but I am thankful she is. As they reached the top of the cottage, Brian noticed that the large man was sleeping on some large soft looking square, below him a smaller square laid on the floor. “That is what I wanted to show ya, little hero. Get on the little square and lay down.” Brian cautiously placed a paw on the mattress, feeling the softness against his paw, he on it and laid down. “Selma, I love being in the pack. How can I ever thank you for you kindness.”

Selma smiled and got on the mattress with him, her bulk curling around him, without thinking he scooted backward into her soft and fuzzy body. “We were snowed in and ya came to our recuse. I haven't had someone I could talk to in years. If ya want to show ya thanks just stay here and keep me company.” The larger canine gave Brian an affectionate lick behind the ears, he shivered in pleasure and began to pant happily, she placed her paw over his body and pulled him closer. “Its gonna be pretty nice having a sexy male around the cottage.” Brian blushed and snuggled closer to her warm body. She thinks I am sexy?! Yes! Nearly getting frozen to death is the best thing that has EVER happened to me! “I have to tell ya, Brian getting snowed in wasn't so bad since it brought ya to our little cottage. Lets get some rest, I have a lot to show ya and tell ya tomorrow.” They both drifted off into a peaceful slumber, each content with finding a new friend in the most unlikely of ways.
