My parents were quite poor, and unable to buy us toys. My brother and I used to take old, washed-out tin cans and pretend they were racecars. Sometimes my folks would save up and buy a loaf of sliced bread. Once the bread was eaten, we'd tie the empty plastic bag onto a string and fly it outside like a balloon.

I thought we were poor, but I guess not as much as many families. I got $1.00 a month to spend on anything I wanted. I liked to buy Little Golden Books if I saw any good ones. One time I bought enough pop beads to make a lavender bracelet. Believe me, that wasn't very many.

I LOVED coloring books and crayons.
