The Greek text is "while I go on decreasing (present passive infinitive elattousthai"
So, it happened just as he said.

Welcome to CF!

Keep going with the thought.... John the B kept his ministry. Why not throw in his lot with the Christ whom he testified as the one who is to come - which in essence was the sole purpose of his own ministry.

Thanks for the welcome, andry.
He called himself the "friend of the bridegroom" who rejoiced to hear the voice of the Bridegroom. He seems here to distinguish himself from the Bride, the church forming through Jesus' ministry. Jesus' Himself makes this distinguishment as well, calling him the greatest man born of women, but that he that is least in the kingdom is greater than he. So, John had his place, and it was not to throw himself in among the bride being formed by the will of God.
So, I see John as the last of the Old Covenant prophets even though we find him in the New Testament. He dies before Jesus's blood is shed and before the Holy Spirit is poured out on the church.
Those are my thoughts on your question.
