The bridge has been closed since Sunday after there was an "unexpected movement" in the bridge that crosses the Mississippi River between Iowa and Wisconsin.

Work is now beginning to stabilize the 93-year-old piers so the bridge can re-open. The Iowa DOT said the work could take up to two months.

Until the bridge is repaired or other crossing options put into place, drivers have to go to either La Crosse or Prairie du Chien to cross the river.

[Those two cities are ~60 miles apart along the Iowa/Wisconsin border.]

NYC went through that "money saving" deferred maintenance. It resulted in the famous headline "Ford to City: Drop Dead" (no federal bail out).

Closed bridges are a nightmare for commuters. Perhaps work from home will be reinstated?
