Are there ppl in the 21st century who believe that govt. policies will be based upon religion? Policies are based upon profits, extending political influence over regions, and such. Protecting this or that religion isn't the job of the govt..

Security in the 1st Amendment details religious freedom and in the Civil Rights Division of the DOJ. Another task to become informed about: legal penalties and legal privileges.

A few examples that politicize toleration.

Christians in the Middle East were doing just fine until British and American meddling increased the animosity between the two faiths. America has done more damage to the Christians in the Middle East than any fundamentalist Islamic organisation. Oil, it seems, is a more powerful force that God eh;)

Nonsense. Christians have been leaving since the end of WW1 when the Christian Imperial powers control of the region gave them a way out using the Imperial trade and transport networks. This trend has accelerated with the departure of these powers and the decline of their influence in the region. American foreign policy simply deals with this reality. Obama tries a softly softly approach and the Republicans make it clear - mess with us and there will be consequences.

More deeply this leaving means something is going to happen in the Middle East. The region is being handed over to its authentic beliefs and to their consequences.

Invading Iraq certainly wasn't that helpful for the Christians there.

I disagree as a good % of those Christians were thereby enabled to get out and are now enjoying a better life elsewhere. Those that remain are perhaps for the first time in centuries awake to the implications of faith. More should be done to protect them not least by mainstream Muslims who claim to respect "people of the book" and to believe that there is "no compulsion in religion". The way in which newly empowered Muslims answer the question of how to treat the Christian religious minority within their borders will determine the saleability of Islam the world stage for a generation to come. At the moment their brand credibility is plumetting.

Christians leaving Iraq contributes to the elemination of Christianity in the region doesn't it? Why did they need the war to leave if that's what they wanted to do all along?

Are you saying that suffering caused them to renew their faith? That may be true for some but I don't think it makes the problems forced on Christians there a good thing. We can't say we did a good thing by contributing to their suffering just because some gained a few insights from it

It is not a good thing that Christians are being persecuted and it is good that despite your faith icon we agree on this.

I think that the war in Iraq has surprised many in the West who had expected liberation from Sadam Hussein would lead people to embrace Liberal Democracy in which Christianity could thrive or at least survive rather than a more passionate and extreme version of Islam that directly seeks out Christians to kill them. At the end of the day this is the choice of the Iraqi people and the Arab Spring indicates it may be a sentiment shared more widely across the region. What this means is that the broad trend, that began with the overthrow of the Ottomans in the region by the British, of Christians emigrating, has continued.

What we are looking at is a region of the planet being emptied of Christians at just the time when it is growing almost everywhere else except Europe. In my view that spells disaster for the region and its ultimate doom. It is time for Christians to leave. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have accelerated this imperative while giving the people of these countries a definitive choice about their futures.

May God have mercy on his people and on those who can yet be saved.
