and thats not exactly true, some of the soldiers did indeed know who He was, and believed Him to be who He said He was.
The Romans came to know Jesus because they were more Israelite than the
unbelieving jews, who were descendants of Edomites who lost a war with
Israel in the 2nd century BC and were forced to "convert."
The first city founded on Christianity, Constantinople, was a Roman city
which was built by and named after Roman Emperor Constantine and
became the capital of the first Christian empire, the Eastern Roman Empire,
Byzantium.
To understand many of the things happening in the New Testament, it is
important to know the players. Not all those called, "jews", at that time
were Israelites. Like the Herods, many of the "jews" were Edomites, who
were historical enemies of Israel. There is an historical dynamic happening
in the New Testament between the lines.
Jesus said He was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel... and that His
sheep know Him and follow Him... but to other "jews" Jesus said they
did not believe because they were not His sheep [ie, not Israel, which
means they were Edomites.] This also explains the two verses in the
book of Revelation that speak of those who say they are "jews" but
are the synagogue of satan.
