Okay. There is a lot to be said about this sometimes-touchy topic -- touchy, in that convictions vary so much in this area that one person may find any given program utterly offensive while another will not.
As for myself, it was hard to find an option that fits my exact views on this issue and any personal commentary I can offer. Granted, I wholly believe that a Christian should monitor what they take into their minds in the line of all types of entertainment - TV programming/movies, music, reading material, and so on. But along with much of the general content, I like to factor in general worldviews, philosophies, and the overall moral which is being taught in any given program. I weigh everything with a reasonably open mind, and with my own best judgment, I've made my own discoveries.
I have found that even the most innocent of TV programming is going to contain some sort of sinful actions (or content some will not like, depending on general taste or conviction). Many of today's G and PG, geared for family viewing, will have some mild swearing, slangs such as "butt" (which some may view as swearing), and a small amount of "gas" humor (which to me is nothing more than joking about imperfections of the human body (like pimples during adolescence and other such things), but I believe there is a limit. In the classics of yesteryear, they depicted (and sometimes even exalted) a lot of smoking (be it pipes, cigars, or cigarettes) and women in skimpy dance outfits in the old musicals. Shirley Temple and other little girls wore extremely short dresses (being prepubescent is no excuse). Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton were always chasing ladies. "I Love Lucy" showed Lucy lying and scheming with Ethel in some sort of hare-brained plan. Jackie Gleason threatened Alice with his classic line "To the moon!". Yes, the list goes on. There will always be something to nitpick about, and if we avoided every little thing a given person might find the slightest bit inappropriate, you might as well get rid of your TV!
All that said, there is very little on TV (as far as newer programs are concerned) that I think is appropriate for Christian viewership (although, like I said, convictions will differ). I do like "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition", "AFV", "Primetime:What Would You Do?", "The Middle" (which is as gritty as I'll go) and a lot of the stations like Food Network, Animal Planet, and "RFDTV" which contain a lot of educational and beneficial information. And I appreciate some of the exclusively Christian programming (the Christiano brothers have a great evangelical movie ministry), and a lot of the older sitcoms and dramas. And of course, those underrated "moldy oldies"!
