Just for clarification, are you saying that the icon was made by someone who is an Orthodox Christian? I wasn't clear on what you meant with your response. It sounded like you were confirming that it was hand painted, not whether it was made by someone who is an Orthodox Christian.

All icons are made by Orthodox artists in monasteries of Cyprus and Greece.

Here is beautiful Russian Orthodox hand-painted icon Saint George slaying Dragon. Icon was made using traditional technique (egg-tempera on gold background) and signed by author.

I'd prefer newly handpainted icons to look like newly handpainted icons. I'm not a fan of deliberate cracking of the paint to try and make it look like it is much older.

I agree. It's basically destroying the icon.

There is actually no need for icons to be placed in the altar and it is a recent practice. The icon is holy because the person/event depicted in it is holy.

So I am deprived of my icons for no reason?

Well, I requested it, because I thought it was what needed to be done. Father also took some icons that were gifted to me, put them in the altar for one Liturgy, blessed them, and returned them to me the same day.

It just seemed the full blessing was better.

One of the arguments of the iconoclasts against the icons was the fact that there was no prayer for blessing icons! That too is a recent practice, which for the reason I mentioned above is unnecessary.

I guess I never asked the particulars. I do have one very small icon of Christ that was given to me that I keep in my car, and sometimes take with me. It is most precious to me. I asked Father when we first talked about having icons blessed, because I had been praying with it and didn't want to give it up. He did tell me that it wasn't necessary to put it in the altar or do anything, and that it was already blessed. I thought he meant because it was already being prayed with.
