"Hopeless: Fox News stands virtually alone in not airing Haiti benefit concert

On January 22, a wide variety of broadcast, cable, radio, and internet outlets, including CNN and MSNBC, preempted their regularly scheduled prime-time programming and aired Hope for Haiti Now, a benefit concert and telethon to raise funds for Haiti earthquake relief. But even after receiving criticism for giving little coverage to the devastating earthquake in Haiti on its top-rated programs, Fox News did not preempt its programming and air the benefit concert, instead broadcasting regular editions of The O'Reilly Factor and Hannity."

I'm pleasantly surprised that most showed it, and not really surprised that Fox didn't show it.

It is not like the main company, or even Fox News, has ignored the need. Besides, beleive it or not, there is other things going on in the world and other things people want to watch and hear about.

Personal opinion, but I tend to think that those "benefit concerts", are more an exercise in making people who aren't doing anything constructive feel like they're helping.

Seriously, how does watching TV do anything to help anyone? Other than givin one a sense of moral superiority for watching it wwhile condemning Fox for not showing it, that is.

This "benefit concert" one raised $57 million. I imagine that will be of some help in Haiti.

I think fulfilling one's moral commitment to their fellow man is not really being morally superior...unless you're an individual who advocates doing anything less than filling that commitment. The sad thing is that they need to not be made to feel guilty.

$57 mil worth of donation is great and all... but whats it got to do with the concert?

The people who donated money probably would have donated money anyway had they been contacted by cheaper methods of appeal, and most people who watched it probably didn't donate a cent, yet managed to get in on the feel good action through "being part of it". Or something. Not to mention gives the performers a sense of achievment for... pretty much doing nothing outside their normal workday.

This is all just my opinion. Maybe benefit concerts really do reach thousands of people who normally wouldn't donate money and prompts them to. But I doubt it.

Have to be rather dim and unmotivated to need a low brow, pop culture concert to get motivated to send money to Haiti.

That isn't the Fox audience.

The Fox audience has the sort of people whose churches have been doing work in Haiti for decades and whose churches will be there decades after all these preening and self-indulgent celebs are finished strutting around admiring each other for being such wonderful people.

Aside from that, MSNBC and CNN are getting killed in the ratings. They might as well put on kiddie show on. Few adults are watching.

If benefit concerts are as ineffective as you'd like to say they are, then how come this one raised so much money?

Like what, exactly? American Idol auditions? "Simpsons" reruns? Seriously, what does Fox Broadcasting air that isn't mind-numbingly stupid?

Because not everybody gets those channels, whereas everyone who has a TV gets Fox Broadcasting?

Nope, I know a few with Antenna TV's that don't get Fox Broadcasting.

Really? That's odd. Fox is one of the affiliate networks, meaning that everyone should be able to get it, even if they don't have cable. Do these people you know have their TVs all set up with the Digital Receivers you need in order to receive all of the affiliate networks these days?

"Benefit" concerts. Good grief - who cares? A bunch of self-absorbed "artists" with yet another opportunity to display their "concern" for mankind and get quality air time in the process. It's kind of like "Christians" who only attend church on Easter and Christmas - make their self-imposed obligatory appearance and disappear again back into their own world afterwards.

Good for FOX for recognizing these shams as what they are.
