Surprise among priests at WYD Spanish Encounter Mass for having communion distributed in bowls of potato chips

Communion bowls at WYD Mass

During the meeting of Spaniards at World Youth Day (WYD), held in Portugal, a Mass was held in which bowls of potato chips were used to distribute communion instead of ciboria. This unusual gesture has generated surprise and debate among the attendees.

The curious event took place in Estoril, where thousands of young Spaniards gathered to participate in the Mass presided by Cardinal Omella. Instead of the traditional chalices and patens, bowls of potato chips or olives were used to distribute communion among the faithful. As can be seen in the photograph, the bowls were distributed to the priests with the plastic wrap and the Ikea bar code unremoved.

I think it is 'little' things like this, many done one after another ...
that have contributed over the years to the loss of reverence and respect for the Holy Eucharist.

Just sends the message that 'nothing special is going on here' ...
the sense of sacredness is gone.

I 'get' that there can be extenuating circumstances for such a choice, but the WYD Spanish Encounter Mass?
I guess one has to decide for him or herself, if that was an extenuating circumstance ...

They're not potato chip bowls specifically, but just bowls and they were clean
and look to have been recently purchased for the event.

If this is all that was available, God Bless them!

Christ comes to us in various ways.

It's ideal to have the Consecrated Eucharist in gold lined chalices,
but they're not always available, especially at a large event like WYD.

Some people would rather deny Holy Communion to teens than
let them receive Jesus as they did.

Addressing Eucharistic rumors

Distributing the Eucharist to hundreds of thousands of pilgrims is not easy. Several months ago, WYD organizers began to enlist extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, who received special formation over the past few weeks. A total of 1,800 Eucharistic ministers were present at the opening Mass.

Just a few minutes after WYD’s opening Mass began Tuesday, hundreds of Eucharistic ministers began to file into the crowd and took up their positions with ciboria in hand, standing there throughout the Mass until Communion. This led to rumors that the hosts were consecrated at a distance. But The Pillarhas confirmed that this was not the case: The hosts had been consecrated beforehand, at another Mass, and were stored in a tent that doubles as a chapel for staff.

I do not know if this is standard practice at events with this many Catholics, or if it has happened at other WYDs, but from a purely practical perspective, it would have been very difficult, if not impossible, to have the extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion only take their positions after the consecration.

Article 85 of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal says that “it is most desirable that the faithful, just as the priest himself is bound to do, receive the Lord’s Body from hosts consecrated at the same Mass,” but this was clearly deemed to be impractical.

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal is the "General Instruction," not the absolute instruction.

You can be sure that the Vatican and other liturgical experts approved of the process for distributing.
Holy Communion for WYD celebrations. Fact is, WYD didn't exist when the GIRM was established.

I was listening to Fr. Robert McTeigue, SJ, on The Catholic Current radio show today.
He said that no priests or clergy went down into the crowds of youth at the WYD opening mass to distribute communion;
that several hundred bishops and priests were sitting down during distribution, which was done by Eucharistic ministers.

So I had to look it up for myself ...

This video shows how distribution is being done, using the white plastic bowl ...
