She also was a heck of seamstress and knew shorthand. No one knows shorthand now. I wish I had learned it to take notes in college.
My mother also knew shorthand and was a clerk typist.

Lol ... there is at least ONE person alive today here on CF who knows shorthand ...
though I haven't thought about it, or used it, in years!

Shorthand was very helpful to me when younger, in securing many jobs.
It was considered a +plus for an office job applicant to be able to take dictation in shorthand.
I graduated from high school in 1972. Many of us majoring in business courses elected to learn shorthand.
I always thought it was fun ... like knowing a secret code language!
:sunglasses:

I started out in my career as a clerk-typist.
@Rescued One ... Did your mother work for the government?
'Clerk-typist' was a very common job classification series within the Federal government.

p.s.
I just googled it and discovered that shorthand is still being learned and used today!
But I see there are different shorthand systems. Back in the 60's/70's, it was Gregg shorthand that we learned.

Oswald Chambers wife took shorthand notes of all his messages. After he died, they were compiled into the classic book: " My Utmost for His Highest"

Wow. That's impressive!
What a great use of her skills!

'My Utmost for His Highest' is a wonderful book.
As a 'secretary type', when you work on an interesting project ... you tend to learn alot.
I imagine his wife had much of this book 'stored up' in her heart!

My mother worked for various government offices when we lived near DC and also worked for military in NJ, FL and Germany.

According to the late Elizabeth Elliott, her goal in life was to be stenographer for the British Prime Minister; then she met Oswald, and to the mission field they went.

I remember watching Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul Jabbar) leading the Milwaukee Bucks to the NBA title. I bought a book from the Weekly Reader mail order form, called "Big A The story of Lew Alcindor" in 4th grade. I still have it somewhere in the house
JJ
I seen Jackie Robinson's final public appearance live at Riverfront stadium before the A's - Reds '72 world series

I find it funny, that old music from my parents generation was called "oldies" , but my generation's music is called "classic rock" - like we cannot admit we're getting old.
You were a sports buff are you still today?

At my vocational school in high school, I always thought typing was for girls. Boy was I wrong. :(

After the Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore in 95, my sportsball interest has waned dramatically. For years I was a Browns/ Reds fan, learned from my Dad ( the Bengals weren't here until 1968)

Pete Rose needs to be inducted! I wish I knew the value of baseball cards instead of putting them on my bicycle.

Pete came to a Chrysler Plymouth dealer in the town I grew up in, to sign autographs, back when I was about 14-15. My brother stood in line for a long time to get one from him. I bet the town population doubled that day. I never had a fascination with autographs, so I passed on the long long line.

They made such a brouhaha over Rose, and yes he did lie. But now you watch games and they're showing the betting line on the screen. Hypocrisy much?

I've heard of Gregg shorthand but I learnt Pitman in 1972. Forgotten it now though.

At my vocational school in high school, I always thought typing was for girls. Boy was I wrong. :(
I left school, in the UK, in 1969 and would have thought that typing was for girls. The only professions which seemed to be open to us (I'm female) were nursing and teaching. One girl, a year older than me, went into engineering and that seemed very strange at the time. I tried teaching, but went into office work instead. However I'm so thankful that I learnt to touch type; it's such a useful skill nowadays!

Standing. Along the side of the road waiting for President Kennedy to go by in his white limo. We waved and he waved back. Typing this tears came. I can still see it in my mind. He was sure special.

When I was laid off in 2016 and went to college, I wish I learned short hand for taking notes.

When I went back to college I recorded the lectures instead of taking notes. Lol
