Just before Christ died, He said “It is finished” (John 19:28-30). What does the word “It” refer to - what was finished?

In Titus 2:14, it describes what he finished by saying that Jesus gave himself to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people of his own possession who are zealous for doing good works, so becoming zealous for doing good works in obedience to God's law is the way to believe in what he finished on the cross (Acts 21:20).

When specifically did this happed - just after Jesus died on the cross?

Right here at this time
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

What does the "when" matter? The WHAT is what matters, the "when" is irrelevant. God's work is not bound by time.

Scripture had been fulfilled. There were many unfulfilled prophesies before Jesus Christ of Nazareth came. From the temple made desolate to the infilling of His Holy Spirit in the believer, all that was promised to the world came to fruition in Him. Blessings.

The plan of God to reconcile the world to Himself.
That is the common answer that most people give, but it is not correct. The apostle Paul states that for the work of our salvation to be complete, Christ had to first rise from the dead: “… for if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is in vain; and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost" (1 Corinthians 15:12-18) – also see Romans 4:25.

Now obviously, when Christ was on the cross, and He said "It is finished", He had not yet risen from the dead. So, if we are still in our sins, how could the work of our salvation be complete?

Secondly, the timing is wrong. Starting at the point when Christ said "It is finished", this incorrect position implies a future event, but the "It" refers to something in the past; something that had already happened; something that had already been completed while Christ was alive, because Christ was still living when he made that statement.

This erroneous position can't be true because it requires that Christ had to first die for those actions to take place. He had to die for the debt to be paid in full. He had to die for all our sins to be wiped away.

So, as was just shown above, "It is finished" refers to a past event which took place before Christ died, not a future event after He died.

Dear Maria,

Thanks for your reply. Are you saying that the work of our salvation was completed when Jesus died on the cross?

The payment for sin God required, Jesus on the cross took away the sin of the world.
Dear Taylor,

Thanks for your reply. What you said does not answer the question I asked. Consider the following, especially what Paul says.

Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost" (1 Corinthians 15:12-18) – also see Romans 4:25 So, if we are still in our sins, how did Christ's death wipe them all away?

Now obviously, when Christ was on the cross, and He said "It is finished", He had not yet risen from the dead. So, if we are still in our sins, how could the work of our salvation be complete?

Secondly, the timing is wrong. Starting at the point when Christ said "It is finished", this incorrect position implies a future event, but the "It" refers to something in the past; something that had already happened; something that had already been completed while Christ was alive, because Christ was still living when he made that statement.

Your answer can't be correct because it requires that Christ had to first die for those actions to take place. He had to die for the debt to be paid in full. He had to die for all our sins to be wiped away.

So, as was just shown above, "It is finished" refers to a past event which took place before Christ died, not a future event after He died.

Also, where in scripture do we find the verse: "Jesus' death wiped away all sins"?

When a bail is posted for someone in jail,
the one putting up the bail may call that someone or see them in person
and , having paid the bond, they may well say "it is done" /finished..... all is accomplished that is needed for you to be released....
even if it takes some time for the action to be accomplished .... it is effectively fulfilled, finished, accomplished when the payment was made.... if I understand the bail process ...

If you think/ thought you already know the answer,
is your op just a rhetorical question in that way ? i.e. not looking for the answer , already decided what it is ?

His work was finished - the last breath He took was it. All was accomplished because all HAD been done that was required - the innocent Lamb rises on the basis of that perfect life and sacrificial death.

At the death, the resurrection was sure because of the life.
