A Vatican official has said the Catholic church will excommunicate a medical team who performed Colombia's first legal abortion on an 11-year-old girl, who was eight weeks pregnant after being raped by her stepfather.

Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, the president of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for the Family, said in addition to the doctors and nurses, the measure could apply to "relatives, politicians and lawmakers" whom he called "protagonists in this abominable crime".

hmmm what a nasty situation. One that I can see two sides on.

She is an 11 year old girl who is pregnant, chances are her body wouldn't have been able to complete the pregnancy anyway, due to her body being so immature, not to mention the future damage it would have done to her, in the fact that she may not have been able to produce children. And she was also raped, that would be hard to look at that child. Also how does an 11 year old raise a child?

But then on the other side of the fence, there are experts that say a fetus no matter what stage is a human being, and did they have the right to kill it. And at eight weeks the fetus would have a heart beat.

Well I'm undecided on how I feel about this one. But I pray that God brings His justice upon the man that has put this young girl in this position. Also I pray that God holds the young girl in His arms and shows her the pure and innocent love she requires right now. But I also pray for wisdom, that the Catholic church Cardinal, feels love for her, her family and understanding for the medical team that felt it was their duty to perform this procedure. As God's word tells us not to judge, we should not judge anyone, but pray for God's wisdom and guidance in this situation.

Carey, do you have daughters? What would your honest reaction be to the same situation? Maybe you and your wife were separated and it was your daughter's step-father. Or maybe another relative? How do you think the whole thing would affect a 11-year-old girl?

Its a terrible situation, I agree. But a full-term pregnancy may not be likely, and could damage the girl for ever.

Be honest. How would you feel?

I'd hate to see my daughter in pain, but I don't think I could take part in murdering an innocent even to spare her.

Same here. If you recall, Jesus was not his father Jospeh's son. Its like Clint Eastwood says in Unforgiven, 'Killin a man's a helluva thing. You take all he has and all he'll ever have.'

I don't know I guess the mother in me is up but and please forgive me for this but I would be of the opinion of if I give my daughter an abortion yes I'm taking part in killing an innocent child but it would be the second murder I had commited because be blowed if that step dad would live to see another day.

I know that's not what Jesus would do but I think in a circumstance like that my flesh would rise up and I would be not thinking at all.

Hmmm. Interesting. 3 men - against abortion, even if it was their daughter who had been raped and abused.

Three women, two for the abortion, one undecided.

Maybe us women know a bit more about the whole thing of childbirth, rape etc. than men do??

Knowing more about child birth and rape has nothing to do with the issue. It is not right to murder a child because of the sins of its father. No two ways about it.

There is always adoption as an option.

The problem with it is the little girl in this case was 11 years old chances are she wouldn't have carried the pregnancy right through term, so the either the baby or her would have died anyway.

Believe that if it makes you feel better. The fact is young women are built to have babies. If you must worry about dangerous pregnancies look to the older women who choose to have babies when they're 40.

Expecting one child to give birth to another as the result of rape is foolishness. Not only should the abortion be allowed; the stepfather should be put to death.

But what did the child do to deserve death?
Nothing, but what did the young girl do to deserve being raped? Decisions are hard, but my tendency would be to err on the side of the 11 year old.

In Christ,
Tracey

Of course an abortion was the right thing to do. The child was RAPED and while the potential human in utero is not responsible the ACTUAL human will be the one paying the price for being violated.
