....you proofread your posts on CF to be sure your sentences are not ending with dangling participles.

I don't know what your speaking of.

for me, it's the whole "never end a sentence in a preposition" rule

YOU KNOW YOU HAVE BEEN READING A LOT WHEN:

All the bookshelves in the office are full to overflowing and now the books are stacking up around you and you have to traverse a path to the desk! If I move to the right or to the left, I will knock a stack over and it will begin a dominoe effect!

My roommate always teases me because of the stacks of books overcrowding my desk. Sometimes, I actually have to relocate stacks to the floor or my bed or something, so I have room to write.

Bah! Not ending a sentence in a preposition is such a non-rule anymore. It hasn't been in the Chicago Manual of Style for over 20 years now. The same thing with split-infinitives, in most cases.

Jon, the problem is I've been out of school for 30 years, so . . . . . . new rules don't apply, I never learned them.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you on Semper Reformanda! God bless!

....uhhh, oh yea, the nightstand.... I have the perfect mixture of reading materials completely covering the nightstand so that I have to make room for the alarm clock each night:

theology/philosophy, of course (right now is Clark's "philosophy of education")
hunting and fishing magazines
Bass Pro Shop Master Catalog (it is approaching Christmas after all)
humor (right now..."The Darwin Awards")
novel (right now...Camus' "The Stranger" for the 90th time)
health (right now Andrew Weil's glucose/exercise advice....call me a dreamer)

now multiple that by around 4x and you have my nightstand.

If a stranger saw my side of the bed they'd think that the books were holding up the bed. I have stacks of them at the very edge of the bed (so I don't trip of course) and they go right up to the box springs. Those are in addition to the books I have in bookcases, my purse, the windowseat, the coffee table. . . . . .

oh well

Make sure you don't mess with Mr. Anthropomorphism!

My old high school English teacher put it perfectly when she said: "Quoting is lazy. Express things in your own words."
You've got to be kidding me. Your high school English teacher said this?

My husband gave me the most wonderful Christmas gift two years ago: he constructed built-in bookcases for the office! I promptly filled them. Now I am thinking of having him build another set, this time only half-way up the wall in the room over the garage (there are windows on that wall and I think it would look great!). I suppose I'll have to agree to his wish for a pool table for that room though...

CC&E -still has books piled in various places around the house. If you stack them just right, they become decorative items...
