Continued from: YHWH's Table (Part 1)

In Part 1 the was no mention of sin, nor the High Priest, being associated with the korban. The one who is coming near for acceptance, and shelter, is to slay the animal; and he is to prepare it for YHWH's table. Let us continue our study.

(CLV) Lv 2:1
When a soul brings near a cereal approach present (minchah מנחה) to Yahweh, of flour shall his approach present be; and he will pour oil on it and put frankincense on it. It is an approach present (minchah מנחה).

Well the CLV really did some interesting things with this translation; but we have a new word to consider. In the Hebrew Manuscript, it only appears once in this verse.

I will present the words in the order of the manuscript to the best of my current ability:

Gift korban she is close that and soul (nehfesh נפש ) oil on her and he pours korban of him he shall be flour to YHWH frankincense on her and he gives

"And he gives" seems to begin the next thought; and that would align with the true words of the next verse; but for the sake of brevity, I'll leave it at that for now.

Let's do a concise review of this verse. We have flour being used in conjunction to a korban. So far there is no mention of a High Priest, no mention of sin, and no mention of blood. Let's see where this goes for ourselves, instead of what someone might have told us in Sunday school. In my understanding a present, or a gift, is voluntary.

(CLV) Lv 2:2
And he will bring it to the sons of Aaron, the priests. He will extract from there his full fistful of its flour and its oil along with all its frankincense. Then the priest will cause this memorial portion of it to fume on the altar; it is a fire offering, a fragrant odor to Yahweh.

========================================
An interesting side note is that the Hebrew word for memorial in this passage, (referring to money) stems for the same Hebrew root:

(CLV) Ex 30:15
The rich one, he shall not increase it, and the poor one, he shall not decrease it from half a shekel, to give as Yahweh's heave offering to shelter your souls (nephesh).

There are those words shelter and nephesh again.

It seems that money too can shelter one's nephesh.

(CLV) Ex 30:16
You will take the sheltering ransom silver from the sons of Israel and give it to the service of the tent of appointment that it become for the sons of Israel a memorial before Yahweh to shelter your souls.

It seems that this passage was fulfilled in Acts 10:4. in Cornelius.

(CLV) Ac 10:4
Now he, looking intently at him, and becoming affrighted, said, "What is it, lord?" Now he said to him, "Your prayers and your alms ascended for a memorial in front of God.

This is just a side note. It might come up again as we go deeper into this study.

========================================

(CLV) Lv 2:3
Yet the rest from the approach present is for Aaron and for his sons, a holy of holies from the fire offerings of Yahweh.

So if I'm reading this right a handful of flour goes to YHWH's table, as he is served first; then Aaron and his sons dine on the remainder.

(CLV) Lv 2:4
When you bring near an approach present, baked in the stove, it shall be unleavened perforated cakes of flour mingled with oil or unleavened wafers anointed with oil.

(CLV) Lv 2:5
If an approach present on a flat pan is your approach present of flour, it shall be unleavened bread mingled with oil.

(CLV) Lv 2:6
You are to morsel it into morsels, and you will pour oil on it; it is an approach present.

(CLV) Lv 2:7
If an approach present of the cooking-pot is your approach present, of flour with oil shall it be made.

(CLV) Lv 2:8
When you bring to Yahweh the approach present which is made in any of these ways, bring it near to the priest that he may bring it close to the altar.

(CLV) Lv 2:9
Then the priest will raise up from the approach present the memorial portion of it and cause it to fume on the altar; it is a fire offering, a fragrant odor to Yahweh.

(CLV) Lv 2:10
Yet the rest of the approach present is for Aaron and for his sons, a holy of holies from the fire offerings of Yahweh.

I find it interesting that this particular bloodless minchah is described as kadosh of kadoshim.

(CLV) Lv 2:11
No approach present at all which you are bringing near to Yahweh shall be made with leaven, for all yeast and all honey—none of it shall you cause to fume as a fire offering to Yahweh.

(CLV) Lv 2:12
As an approach present of firstfruits shall you bring them near to Yahweh, yet on the altar they shall not ascend for a fragrant odor.

(CLV) Lv 2:13
All of your approach presents shall you salt with salt; and you shall not cause the salt of the covenant of your Elohim to cease on your approach present. On all of your approach presents shall you bring salt near to Yahweh your Elohim.

The salt of the covenant shall not cease on our minchah.
On all of your korban shall you bring salt near to YHWH.

Interesting.

(CLV) Lv 2:14
Yet if you bring near an approach present of firstfruits (bikurim) to Yahweh, you shall bring near pollinated ears toasted by fire, groats of the new crop, as the approach present of your firstfruits.

It would seem that these korbanim aren't limited to animals and grain. It would include fruit and vegetables. In light of fruit, vegetables, and grain, all being acceptable to YHWH as korbanim; the teaching that Cain's minchah wasn't acceptable to YHWH, because it wasn't an animal, seems to be an erronious teaching.

As a matter of fact YHWH has given his people an eternal mandate to korban with bikurim.

Perhaps Cain didn't offer his best to YHWH.

(CLV) Lv 23:14
No bread or toasted grain or groats of the new crop shall you eat until this very day, until you bring the approach (korban) present of your Elohim. It shall be an eonian statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

(CLV) Lv 2:15
When you will put oil on it and place frankincense on it, it is an approach present.

(CLV) Lv 2:16
The priest will cause the memorial portion of it to fume from its groats and from its oil along with all its frankincense, a fire offering to Yahweh.

So, in this study, what have we observed? The korban does not require blood. The korban outlined in Leviticus 2 makes no mention of sin. YHWH requires bloodless korbanim. However, it seems more and more that some korbanim are voluntary. The korban in Leviticus 2 is not coming from the High Priest; but is going to the High Priest.

Shabbat shalom.
