Worst book you ever read?

Big mistake number 2

Falconer is a 1977 novel by John Cheever. It tells the story of Ezekiel Farragut, a university professor and drug addict who is serving time in Falconer State Prison for the murder of his brother. Farragut struggles to retain his humanity in the prison environment until he begins an affair with a fellow prisoner.

The homosexual theme (Cheever was bi-sexual himself) didn't bother me as much as the poor writing. BORING PSYCHO BABBLE.

That book by Jimmy Buffett....something about Sand and sun or whatever. I was stupid enough to buy it. Obviously it was fairly bad if I can't even remember the name of it!

The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli

I got so bored reading this political treatise that I didn't make it halfway through.

Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles-unbelievable! Hardy takes five pages to describe a flower! I was forced to read that in college. And anything by Hendy David Thoreau-blame the snooty college prof that made me read him.

Do you think it's possible that we can be put off an author/book because of poor or uninspirational teaching? I think many people are put off Shakespeare, for example, because of the way he's taught in school, whereas I was fortunate enough to have a tutor at college who brought 'King Lear' alive for me and started a life-long love (so far!) of the Bard.

We had to read "Civil Disobedience." While the guy had some good ideas...for cryin' out loud! Did he have nothing better to do than write and write and write and write....

What he said in two paragraphs could easily be said in a few sentences. He needed a good editor.

I loved Tess....but hated The Sun Also Rises which some people loved.... go figure

What a lame excuse for a book...

The characters were flat, the dialoge was a pitiful excuse for Mr. Brown to shoehorn page after page of psuedo-history into a plot so thin and insipid it makes Nancy Drew look like Dostoyevski.

IT doesn't matter if you are a Christian or not...this book was LAME.

Ahhh, yes. Completely agree. I have nothing against the book, I believe that it is a work of fiction and people are taking it waaaay too far by doing all this silly protesting. But when it just comes down to it, this book sucks. I mean, oh my goodness, how boring. No, no, I didn't finish it. I got to page 70 or something, but I couldn't take it anymore! It was pure torture. I saw the movie, and I hated that soooo...

Holden Caulfield, the main character in the novel, is nothing but a whiney, judgmental person. He judges EVERYTHING;from the way people talk, to the way people breathe. He is also a very hypocritical and unstable person.

Holden would say something like the followng:

"So, I decided that I would go to 36th street. On the my way there, I saw a bunch of phonies wearing coats in the middle of winter. I really hate phonies who wear coats in the middle of the winter. I really do. So I went to the movie, and I took off my coat."

I know, I shouldn't disrespect a classic, but come on! You are right about everything SH89! What an irritating character! There was barely a storyline for me to follow.


Yes, I've got another classic to list. No one else has said this yet, but I despised Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Man oh man, what a horrible book. The writing is fine but the storyline itself just makes me itch! I mean, a bunch of young British boys get stranded on and island and then start killing each other off? That's just sick.



I saw that someone mentioned Rebecca on here. I actually adored this book and found it excellent. Sorry, I know this isn't the forum for that, but I thought I'd say it since I saw the title appear.
