I heard that the new pope administered communion to both VP Biden and Janet Napolitino. I don't get this.

Wow. No discipline whatsoever.

But you know darn well if by some miracle they started spouting off at the mouth that justification is by faith alone through Christ alone they'd be excommunicated on the spot!

this is something we know?
I mean if he did not forbid communion over the abortion issue, what makes you think that he would forbid communion over the particulars of justification?

and "excommunicated on the spot" is not really done so much anymore
you are far more likely to get a letter or get asked to have a talk with the bishop or in the most extreme examples you will get a letter and then two days latter an open letter will also be sent out.
but yeah, "on the spot" not so much

Not necessarily.

If they did that, they would be heretics and thereby automatically excommunicate themselves. No letter would be necessary.

This is very good to know. Do you think this goes far enough? Should they be allowed to partake in Holy Communion?
I think the Catholic Church should take discipline more seriously
It says he was chastised, does this mean that he should have known he wasnt ?eligible? to take communion?

Just trying to understand not arguing.
from what has been made public, yes he should have known that he was not eligible
Maybe the Pope just didn't recognise them. He's not from the US.
possible
it is mostly left up to the individual to decide for themself
but it is assumed that the person will follow the wishes of the Catholic Church on who is welcome to take communion and who is not

We Presbyterians don't have any room to talk concerning the issue of discipline either, of which their is so little it is, for all intents and purposes, non existant.

Interesting OP. I've wondered, myself, how "good ol'' Gov. Martin O'Malley here in MD can claim to be a good Catholic (and still receive Communion) when he is completely pro-abortion and pushing the gay marriage agenda in the state.
