Why wasn't the Sabbath a law in Genesis? Its mentioned right at Creation.

Yet we don't see it implemented into law until Exodus, the 10 Commandments. Or was it assumed before Exodus and done automatically by God fearing people back then? I found it odd to do a word search for sabbath in Genesis and find nothing.

What is holy to God should not be profaned by man, so we would still be obligated to keep the Sabbath holy even if God had never commanded anyone to do that.

and then explain why God had to instruct them not to have other gods and why they built an idol and began to worship it? Seems that they were not previously practicing the worship of the God of Abraham.

Making up the rules as you go. . .boot-strapping your way to your personal theology.

The same reason he had to instruct them on murder, lying and adultery; i.e., because he was giving them his code for their conduct.

If you're referring to the golden calf, they built it as an image of Abraham's God whom they worshipped.

It's not that they weren't necessarily worshipping the God of Abraham, but that (some) were worshipping other 'gods' in addition to God, even going so far as to have these 'images' of other gods in their homes.

It pointing to that full-time salvation rest in his one and only beloved Son, where we would rest from our own work to save, and in his coming and exceedingly costly work which saves.

We can have the assurance of salvation through Jesus .... the reality of it (full time as you call it) doesn't happen until He returns.

His word is clear .... He created the day and made it HOLY (separate and special from all the other days).

Hebrews 4

The Sabbath Rest
(Genesis 2:1–3; Exodus 16:22–30)

1Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be deemed to have fallen short of it. 2For we also received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, since they did not share the faith of those who comprehended it.a3Now we who have believed enter that rest. As for the others, it is just as God has said:

“So I swore on oath in My anger,

‘They shall never enter My rest.’ ”

And yet His works have been finished since the foundation of the world. 4For somewhere He has spoken about the seventh day in this manner: “And on the seventh day God rested from all His works.”c 5And again, as He says in the passage above: “They shall never enter My rest.”

6Since, then, it remains for some to enter His rest, and since those who formerly heard the good news did not enter because of their disobedience, 7God again designated a certain day as “Today,” when a long time later He spoke through David as was just stated: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”

8For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. 9There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God. 10For whoever enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from His.

11Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same pattern of disobedience.

Jesus kept the 7th day Sabbath .... follow the Lamb.

We can have the assurance of salvation through Jesus .... the reality of it (full time as you call it) doesn't happen until He returns.
We rest full-time now from our own works to save and rest completely in his work which has saved.
Hebrews 3:7-4:11 is talking about two different rests, one physical, the other spiritual:
the former is the physical Canaan rest from their enemies into which they refused to go in Numbers 14, and which is used as a warning against failure to go into
the latter spiritual full-time salvation rest of the gospel.

"Today, when you hear his voice (in the gospel), do not harden your hearts against it."
8For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
The rest by Joshua spoken of here is the physical Canaan rest from their enemies (Joshua 1:13; Exodus 33:14; Deuteronomy 12:9-10, Deuteronomy 25:19), into which they refused to go in Numbers 14, and paid a high price, denial of Canaan to that generation, and which rest was fulfilled in 1 Kings 5:3-4, 1 Kings 8:56.

While the rest of Hebrews 3:7-4:11 is the spiritual full-time rest (from one's own works to save) of gospel salvation.
That is the disobedience regarding the Canaan rest from their enemies.

While that rest is v.3, God's own full-time rest from all his work, into which we enter when we receive and believe the gospel of salvation by faith in Jesus Christ.

God's own full-time rest is our full-time rest in gospel salvation from our own work to save ourselves, and in Christ's work alone which saves us from the wrath of God (Romans 5:9; John 3:36).
