I have a question for non Catholics.
If you don't believe that Peter was 'the rock'...
why did Christ change his name to 'rock'?
I'm asking because God does everything for a reason.
If the 'rock' is actually Peter's confession...why change his name?? why not just leave it as it is?
This is a serious question and I'm actually interested in what you'd say.
Any ideas?
God bless

Though in the Aramaic it is one word i think that the writers of the gospel chose two similar words in the greek means that Peter was derived from the rock . and may even be a little thick in the skull ..
the reason He came up with the right answer was because the Father revealed it to Him . this is the rock . and Simon was renamed rock because He was the first of the disciples to get it . the revelation that is .
another reason i think God's will is the rock . because later on . Jesus teaches what He says comes from the Father . and says one who builds their life on these teachings are as one who built their house on a rock . and those who don't are as those who built their house on sand .
not just because of similarities of word choice in greek or even the context of general passage . but it is consistent with what Jesus said about rock later on . he even called himself the stone that crushes to powder .
being a rock is more of a God thing .. from what i've observed .
to answer the OP's question: Simon's name was changed because he was like the rock . as a reminder of what the rock was .
bless .
